How Ayurveda Addresses Rheumatoid Arthritis?
Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) affects around 0.92% of adults in India. That is almost 12 million people. Genetics play a significant role in affecting individuals with this autoimmune chronic inflammatory disorder. It is marked by inflammation and pain and there is only as much treatment that is possible with conventional medicine. However, knee pain treatment in ayurveda has been highly effective in the long-term.
What causes Rheumatoid Arthritis?
This type of arthritis features constant inflammation in the synovial joint. The synovium gets inflamed, resulting in redness, pain, and swelling. Gradually, the inflamed synovium causes damage to the cartilage and bone as well. With the cartilage damaged, walking and movement becomes extremely painful, thus adversely affecting the patient’s mobility.
Ayurveda & Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis, referred to as vatarakta in Ayurveda is considered to be caused due to aggravation of vata and rakta. There is obstruction of vayu, which affects the blood. In fact, ayurveda doesn't just associate RA with a single disease. So knee pain treatment in ayurveda follows several therapies.
One aspect of knee pain treatment in ayurveda is to manage Amavata and Vatasonia at various stages. This can involve the use of panchakarma and medicines for managing the condition. These treatment options have been found to be effective in curing and managing rheumatoid arthritis in many studies.
Effective Management
Once the joint cartilage has been damaged, there is no cure for rheumatoid arthritis in conventional medicine. The only solution is management of the symptoms. Medications are provided for reducing inflammation, giving relief from pain, and preventing joint damage. And surgery may also be required in case of extreme damage. Ayurveda, however, has a step by step process for curing this painful condition.
• Kaphavatahara is the name of the knee pain treatment in ayurveda provided during the first stage of vatasonita
• Rakta prasadana is the next phase of treatment
• In madhava nidana, the first stage of treatment is referred to as amavata
If the patient suffers from medas and kapha, it is treated first before RA is addressed.
Raktamokshana Treatment
Raktamokshana Karma is the key treatment option for RA in ayurveda. This is a parasurgical procedure to remove vitiated blood from certain areas of the body. The procedure results in purifying the channels and ensuring that other body areas also become free from disease. This has been found to be a faster knee pain treatment in ayurveda than other options.
Aromatherapy
Rheumatoid arthritis knee pain treatment in ayurveda also involves the use of aromatherapy. Essential oils are used for creating positive physical and mental changes. This therapy benefits RA patients in the following ways:
• Reduced pain and anxiety
• Increased energy levels
• Feeling relaxed
A wide range of essential oils are used for providing relief from RA. The most commonly used options include ginger, eucalyptus, camphor, lavender, clove, frankincense, and geranium.
Hot & Cold Therapy
Heat therapy helps increase circulation and joint flexibility. The treatment can be provided in many different ways:
• Heating pad applied on the joint
• Sauna
• Spending time in hot tub
• Hot paraffin wax treatment
On the other hand, cold therapy helps in slowing down circulation, reducing swelling, and reducing pain. It causes numbness in the nerve endings. The therapy can include partial or full ice bath.
Massage Therapy
Whilst massage therapy for knee pain treatment in ayurveda can provide the following benefits:
• Improved joint function
• Reduced anxiety
• Relief from short-term and long-term pain
• Improved sleep quality
Thus, rheumatoid arthritis treatment options in Ayurveda are quite vast and have been found to be effective. So if you are seeking knee pain treatment in ayurveda, it is best to find the right Ayurveda clinic or specialist.
