The leader that I admire is in the tech industry and is the co-founder of one of the most popular websites today. The leader did not only found the company but ensured that he stuck buy it in the good and the bad times. His commitment to the company has made the organization to be one of the leading social networking services. The leader is one of the youngest billionaires in the world and with his role in the business world; he has managed to touch millions of lives and made a significant impact on culture. The leader is an internet personality, serial entrepreneur, and a public speaker who always seek to take advantage of any opportunity to explore new avenues of his business. He has managed to create new content for his brand and also raised the bar for most advertising organizations. The leader is considered as a technology genius who has managed to learn to be a leader. He usually seeks guidance from some of the great leaders around him and is very good in learning. In his time as a leader, he has a lot of critics and supporters, and despite what people may think about him, he is a college dropout who managed to build something ...
... that very few people have had the privilege of the building which is now a billion dollar company. This leader has shown that everyone has an entrepreneurial spirit and it is our responsibility to find it and develop it to what we feel is a suitable lifestyle. An essential factor that I admire about this leader is that he has taught us that nothing in this life comes easy. We have to work hard to get it and since everyone is given a certain skill; we should hone and develop it.
Maccoby (2004) stated that there are two strengths of a leader including a great vision and scores of followers. In the case of the leader that I selected, he does possess the two qualities. The quality of a person that attract others towards them and one basis of these qualities the others follow him and his instructions that is what is referred to as leadership. The leaders possess the quality of score of followers as he can command his followers and they listen and obey his commands. In this case, the vision of this leader has become the vision of his followers. The leader has a great vision of what he wants he accompany to achieve and also with regards to his personal life. That vision includes following your passion, working hard, preparing for criticism, and taking risks. Great leaders usually have a vision of achieving large-scale ideas and possess the established personal power to transform the visions into reality (Whetten & Cameron 2011). The leader tends to use this power ethically and responsibly resulting in the shared organizational goals being achieved at a positive level. In doing this, the leader has managed to develop an effective interpersonal and organizational relationship.
Power is the ability and potential of influencing other. An individual can exert power without being a leader, but an individual cannot be a leader without power. Through power, the leader has managed to accomplish goals and influence those who they are leading to produce superior performance and safeguard the vitality of the organization. The leader is an outspoken entrepreneur and is determined to succeed in leadership and business at all cost. The leader has used power and influence to speak up on global issues. The leader has been able to spend millions of dollars on things such as creative TV ads urging legislators in the US to fix the broken immigration system in the country. The leader has also advocated for issues such as helping the undocumented immigrants to get American citizenship. The influence and the power that the leader has on others because of his control over the desired resources have a huge impact on his level of leadership (Whetten & Cameron 2011).
With the balance between influence and power, the leader understands that he cannot be able to accomplish his agenda by only using the perceived power. There is high employee satisfaction in the organization under the leadership of this leader. There is a strong relationship between the leader and his employees. The leader has managed to accomplish so much in his executive role. The leader has managed to achieve so much in his company because he is trusted, liked, and respected by his peers. Through influence, the leader understands the importance of his employees to the organization. The leader usually allows their employees with the freedom of developing their interests and taking risks. Under his leadership, the employees in the organization are normally allowed to work on projects that feel most interested in versus those assigned to them. In the organization, it has created a culture that empowers the courage of conviction, freedom of action and speech.
As a college dropout, the leader was able to establish one of the fastest growing companies in history, and it has become an essential part of everyday social life. From the success of this leader in business, some qualities can be associated with him. One of the qualities includes passion. The most successful entrepreneurs share the same quality that includes being a passion for what they do. From a young age, the leader was always fascinated by building systems that connected people and is making the world open to everybody. Looking at the company’s mission, it stated that it aims to give people power of sharing and make the world open and connected. The leader has always been passionate about using technology to connect people and has put so much work in achieving that. With a passion for something gives you the power and energy to continue and not give up when things fail to go as planned. Being a passionate individual, the leader has sees everything as being a learning experience and a stepping stone to move forward.
The second quality associated with the leader is visionary. The leader is always involved in philanthropic work together with his wife and has created an initiative that aims at developing new technology to drive science forward. The leader has met with many world leaders as being part of his vision to shape the future generations and making the world to be even more connected. When starting the organization, the leader had the vision of a more open and a connected world, and he has stuck to the vision of a product that provides value and also connects people and builds a world with much empathy. Through his vision, the leader demonstrates his determination of expanding internet access to the developing nations. It is not possible for a leader to lead without having a clear vision and in this case, the leaders’ vision considers the bigger picture including his followers (Rosen, 2014).
The third quality associated with the leader is an effective communicator. The leader is a strong communicator and has created an open communication work culture that builds trusts making him an effective leader. From the start, the leader established open communication with his employees and always tries to create a relationship where his employees feel free to approach him and share any ideas with him. Strong communication is an essential aspect of leadership, and when the employees see the leader’s effort and ingenuity to reach out to them, they realize that they are open to sharing what is happen and that increases their voice to share their ideas (Rosen, 2014).
Confidence is another quality associated with this leader. Being a highly-successful individual, the leader exudes quiet and highly genuine confidence. The most remarkable leaders are those who are unshakable and have a strong belief in themselves (Senge et al. 2007). The leader believed in himself from a very young age, and that is what helped bring the company to what it is now, and because of confidence, it has helped open a lot of opportunities for the leader. The leader has demonstrated confidence in everything he does, and because of that, his employees always look to him for guidance when things are tough. As a leader, it is always important to keep your composure during the toughest time because everyone will be looking at you when things go sideways. The biggest role as the leader is getting everyone to believe in the common goal and as a result of his confidence; the leader has managed to get his employees to be as passionate about his idea as they would be when working for themselves.
The last quality associated with this leader is problem-solving. The leader has focused a lot on solving problems. The leader is well known to get involved in solving problems that he can help with, and if he does not feel good about what he is doing, he will just stop with it. In everything that the leader does, he has to ensure that the problem is relevant and needs solving to help a consumer or a business. The leader’s focus has always been problem-solving, and innovation and that has made his company highly successful and innovative. The leader’s drive to solve problems has made the organization to be one of the most successful organizations that it is today.
I believe that the five qualities associated with the leader can both be taught and learned. Most people usually find themselves doing roles that they are not prepared for and through their passion for learning; they can acquire certain qualities through experience. The qualities of the leader can be taught when someone is willing to be self-reflecting and make an effort to do that. An individual can be born with these qualities, and some can be taught if we give ourselves the room to grow.
In conclusion, the five qualities have greatly contributed to the leader’s power and influence. The leader achieved the influence and power he has because of his drive in what he wanted and had to lead to being an effective leader. A leader is a man of influence and strong rules in the business world.
