US colleges are open to everyone since they understand the value of diversity. The schools offer the best quality of education in the world and also provide support for international students through international student advisors who assist them navigate and deliver orientation programs. The advisors are responsive to the needs of the global students and assist in introducing them to the American culture and college life.
Colleges in America are educating more international students than ever with reports revealing that nearly one million international students from countries such as China and India have trained in the US in the 2014/15 school year. The increase in numbers of students from overseas indicates the need to understand more about their income, behavior, and impact on education and also how institutions should capitalize on this trend without compromising the education of other students. Though international students have access to scholarships from colleges and their home countries, the students bring in revenue in cash for the American economy. International students are predicted to contribute more than $30 billion a year to the US economy. According to a study on the global student enrollment in US colleges and universities 1954-08, the recruitment of international students in American colleges has been rising over the years.
Colleges benefit from international students since they pay full fees for education. Most of the international students pay for their education in America with personal or family funds. The growing economies in countries like India have created a group of the middle class that can afford American institutions and who appreciate education than the average American.
The presence of international students in American colleges provides US students with exposure to different cultures and ideas in classroom discussions in respect to their perspectives and experiences. The vulnerability has practical value since only a fraction of American students study abroad and therefore sitting in a classroom with an African may be the only exchange that the American students have with people other nationalities and an opportunity to develop critical skills to a globalized workforce (McKenna, Nov 18, par. 9).
Interacting with students from other nationalities contributes to students’ cultural competency, critical thinking skills, and communication skills. Cultural competency refers to the ability to understand and interact with people from diverse cultures and beliefs. Improvement in the cultural competency of college students serves to benefit the students in the real world situations. Students stand to learn a lot about their unique cultures and perspectives. Understanding the different points of view is essential to engaging in interactions with individuals that have contrasting opinions (Daunain, Mar 21, pars.3-8).
Having international students in college improves the communication skills of domestic students. Whether students seek to sharpen their communication skills through learning a foreign language or improving their cultural competency skills, the presence of international students in institutions makes it significantly easier. A study of international students in 2013 found that US students who interacted with international students acquired new cultural perspectives and portrayed increased cultural competency. The skills gained are beneficial to students when entering the workforce.
Conversations with international students may also improve the critical thinking skills of involved parties. The later study found having essential discussions with international students positively affected students ability to think critically about a topic. Surround ding yourself with likeminded people makes one comfortable and therefore college provides a platform to challenge beliefs and expand. Some countries such as the US let international students study for free, and in fact, some American institutions pay the most talented international students to join their systems. The organizations value the early investments that yield more benefits to the country in decades that follow.
With the increase in international students in colleges continuously growing, the American students have the opportunity to interact actively and enhance their self-confidence, leadership and quantitative skills after graduation. Students who engage with international students are more likely to appreciate art and literature, place problems in a historical perspective and interact in a foreign language. According to research, the students are also expected to reexamine their political or religious view and beliefs about other races and ethnicities.
Concerns have however been raised about the globalization of colleges in the US. While there are numerous benefits of exposing students to other cultures, there is a concern if a taxpayer-funded institution should have too many international students. The question is if the colleges should be spending a lot of resources to recruit minority students from the US before enrolling international students (McKenna, Nov 18, par.20). A decrease in the number of foreign enrolments at some colleges could result in a tremendous economic impact since the students contribute billions to the US economy. According to the school factual, international students pay the full of state tuition to attend college and do not qualify for financial aid.
The executive orders of the current administration have added complexity to international students’ recruitment process since there is a general perception that the US is less welcoming to international students. Threats of anti-immigration and deportation have affected the institutions since international students are not sure about their future in the US. Both international students and their families have concerns about the possible future restrictions and expansion of the travel ban.
