Apple has announced a follow-up to the 2017 9.7-inch iPad. iPad 9.7 inches (2018) is cheap - if you are a school buyer, the price is cheap - but Apple Pencil support and better specifications than last year. Read on to find out the release date, price and specifications of the new iPad.

In an education-focused event on March 27, Apple introduced a new low-cost iPad.
The iPad is great for educational themes.
Apple revealed that the iPad's 9.7-inch (2018) can be pre-ordered immediately and will ship next week and arrive at the store - the week starting April 2.
The iPad 9.7in is basically the same physical design as the previous model, except for screen technology, which supports Apple Pencil.
In fact, one thing we want is to laminate the screen. We didn't have much to tap the non-laminated screen of the 2017 model (a surprising return, because even the iPad Air 2 in 2015 has a laminated screen) because it bends slightly when you press it and feels light And cheap.
The frustrating thing is that the situation remains the same. Apple's specification comparison page shows that the new iPad does not have a laminated screen, the same as its predecessor. We don't have a new model yet, so we can't be sure if it's exactly the same, but we're not optimistic.
Beyond that, no great design innovations are expected or specifically wanted to be an attractive low-cost (by Apple standard) medium-sized tablet. We certainly don't want to see the baffle reduction or the removal of the main button.
We anticipate a cautious and incremental improvement in specifications so that Apple can keep prices down, but these updates are quite impressive.
You'll get an A10 Fusion processor that's as advanced as you expected; even the current Pro iPad has only A10X Fusion, an accelerated version of the chip. (Although they may soon be replaced by new Pros using A11 chips, such as the iPhone X.) The 9.7-inch 2017 uses the A9 processor.
Apple said that with the launch of the A10, the new iPad is stronger than most PC laptops and almost all Chromebooks, one of the biggest competitors in low-cost computing and education. It also claims that the A10 Fusion chip will "implement an incredible AR experience on other devices."
Storage is the same as last year, with 32GB as the only entry-level option and 128GB as an upgrade. (The 2017 model also has a 128GB version, and we actually think that this time we will get a 256GB version, compared to the Professional version up to 512GB).
However, Apple is making up for this by focusing on cloud storage - the school will receive 200GB of iCloud storage for free.
The rear camera is the same as last year: an 8Mp camera that provides 1080p HD video. The front camera is still 1.2Mp, 720p HD.
The predictions are correct: the new iPad supports Apple Pencil (and many third-party styluses) to get significant benefits in an educational environment. However, there is no word on Apple Pencil 2.
An Apple spokesperson said the iPad will use "high-resolution touch systems" to "achieve ultra-low latency." That would be the technology we are used to in the Pro model.
The reason for the 9.7-inch iPad is its cheap price tag. Despite the addition of pencil support and improved specifications, Apple's tablet prices are the same as last year, while UK prices are slightly lower. There are also good discounts for school buyers.
