Whether you are buying a home workshop bench or an industrial workbench, choosing a new workbench shouldn’t happen without doing a bit of research first, and knowing what your requirements are. Being functional to your needs is always a top priority, but so too is a workbench that makes it easier for you to work, improving efficiency and safety along the way.

Workbench Sizes

Workbenches come in a variety of sizes, and while there is usually a bit of uniformity to the sizing, it helps to check what you can accommodate in terms of the length of the work bench. But don’t neglect checking the height and depth too: height ensures you have a workbench that is comfortable to work on, without having to bend too low. And depth ensures you have the right amount of space to work on, without having to stretch too far to reach any items at the back of the workbench. Having shelves and drawers for storage is great, and sometimes necessary, but many workbenches are now also modular, meaning you can easily add drawers and shelves afterwards, as needed, and you might even be able to extend the length later too. But modular doesn’t mean always mean you can adjust the height or depth, so focus on getting this right.

Workbench Storage Options

Even though the workbench you are interested in will probably be modular, it’s worth taking a closer look at what the storage options are. Some workbenches might be designed to only have shelving added later, while others will be accommodating to shelves, drawers, power panels, and even the ability to add a stainless-steel sink. Don’t only consider your current needs, but what you might need in future

Workbench Construction Material

Workbenches are typically available in timber or steel, with steel being the preferred choice for most industrial and heavy-duty applications. It’s designed to be long lasting, and to take a bit of a beating, and if you’re working with any liquids or chemicals, cleaning up is easier than with a timber frame.

Workbench Benchtop

Even if the workbench itself has a steel construction, you should still be able to select a benchtop that is more suitable to your specific needs. A good workbench will be one where you can get semi-customised benchtop, in anything from galvanised or heavy-duty steel, through to vinyl, or laminates. Laminates are especially useful your work involves electronics or chemicals, since these are usually available in anti-static or chemical resistant options.

There’s more to choosing a work bench than only considering aesthetic appeal, and while you may not always have a clear idea of what your future needs might be, the configurability of a modular workbench shouldn’t be so limited that you are forced to invest in a new workbench only a few years later. The hardiness of a well-constructed workbench should ensure your workbench doesn’t need replacing too quickly and is instead able to expand as your business or needs do.
