Identify and explain the primary factors in the social environment that create an atmosphere in which business criticism takes place and prospers
There are numerous factors contributing to an atmosphere conducive for business criticism, and some of these factors include affluence, the mass, media, level of education, entitlement mentality, victimization of philosophy, and movement for equal rights. The level of wealth (or simply affluence) gives people the luxury to critique social institutions. For instance, poor people mainly focus on finding enough to eat rather on the cause or cure of social ills. Furthermore, affluence often results in the rising expectations. It is expected that each succeeding generation must be having higher standards of living than their counterparts with low living standards, and become dissatisfied if this fails to occur. Even though the recent economic recession has to some extent regulated the rising expectations though, for a short while, the general drift of rising expectations is likely to continue. Such expectations may outpace the business’s ability to respond, particularly during a recession.
The other factor in the social environment that creates an environment for business criticism is higher levels of education. Higher education level contributes to an atmosphere of criticism since people expect more from life, have more knowledge of ills caused by business and are well equipped to study and analyze the roots of social problems. The other social factor is the mass media, especially television, movies and the Web, which often give the negative public information about business thereby increasing the public’s distrust and misconception of business. These three factors are correlated to each other, for instance, high level of education can lead to affluence and the ability to read and follow the trends in the mass media. It is also through affluence can people afford to access the mass media such as televisions and get into higher heights of education.
