Effective classroom discussions enable the teacher to assess how well students understand the content and critically think about it. Successful discussions are characterized by a high level of student participation, strong focus on the content, and high levels of critical thinking. The strategies of increasing classroom participation are allowing students to share ideas in small groups, use various recognition techniques, and allow students have personal and active involvement.
The strategies of encouraging high levels of thinking include encouraging students to think about the question, use the strategy of Q-SPACE (Question, Silence, Probe, Accept, Clarity, and Elaborate) in shaping discussions, and asking students to reflect on the nature of their contribution. Students need to have a report card that evaluates their discussion as to whether it was effective or not. The process of implementing the circle of knowledge in the classroom involves a set of processes that start with posing an open-ended question that tunes the students’ mind to the content and ends with a synthesis of student learning using a task that helps them to apply the learned concepts. A sample lesson on the circle of knowledge comprises of the aspects of purpose, sparking question, focusing question and a synthesis activity. To sum it all, every effective discussion requires proper planning on the aspects of the purpose of the topic, the framing of the questions, how the questions generate student interest, how they acquire information and run the discussion.
