Introduction
This essay on ‘write about it all assignment’ is in line with the conclusion made in the instructional strategy of The Core Six, where the authors claim that the instructional strategies given in the book have been proven and offer practical ways of responding to the dynamic demands of the Common Core. Also highlighted is the idea that the use of the outlined strategies has been considered as good for the teachers, students, and schools. As discussed in this essay, the Core Six instructional strategy is an essential method of responding to the demands of the Common Core and help to enhance student’s thinking and build the skills essential for college and career life.
Circle of Knowledge
The section on the Circle of knowledge focuses on a discussion of the appropriate strategic framework for the planning of and conducting discussions that enhance student participation and critical thinking. Class discussions have been considered as crucial teaching and learning method since they are highly involving. However, it requires consideration of some factors such as some students refusing to participate, but to a large extent, discussions help to develop new understand and perspectives on issues. The Circle of knowledge is used to address the Common Core due to the need for effective oral communication in the 21st century, speaking and listening to that require thinking, and for facilitating discussions that develop collaborative and interpersonal skills. The research on the circle of knowledge has shown that most of the class discussions are not actual discussions but recitations that involve responding to the questions asked by the teacher. Students are not given adequate time to analyze the content critically, and only a few of them participate effectively. Effective classroom discussions enable the teacher to assess how well students understand the content and critically think about it. Successful discussions are characterized by a high level of student participation, strong focus on the content, and high levels of critical thinking. The strategies of increasing classroom participation are allowing students to share ideas in small groups, use various recognition techniques, and allow students have personal and active involvement.
The strategies of encouraging high levels of thinking include encouraging students to think about the question, use the strategy of Q-SPACE (Question, Silence, Probe, Accept, Clarity, and Elaborate) in shaping discussions, and asking students to reflect on the nature of their contribution. Students need to have a report card that evaluates their discussion as to whether it was effective or not. The process of implementing the circle of knowledge in the classroom involves a set of processes that start with posing an open-ended question that tunes the students’ mind to the content and ends with a synthesis of student learning using a task that helps them to apply the learned concepts. A sample lesson on the circle of knowledge comprises of the aspects of purpose, sparking question, focusing question and a synthesis activity. To sum it all, every effective discussion requires proper planning on the aspects of the purpose of the topic, the framing of the questions, how the questions generate student interest, how they acquire information and run the discussion.
