Trimming The Nails And Their Kaffarah During The Ihram

Usually, Muslims should cut the nails both of hand and feet once in a week, but during the state of Ihram, pilgrims are not allowed to cut the nails either hands or feet. Zaid bin Arqam (RA) reported, “The Messenger of Allah’s Apostle told that he who does not remove bodily hair from below the navel, and does not trim the nails and mustache, is not considered among us. Because it is against our practice.

Certainly, in common days it is compulsory for Muslims to trim the nails as well as above-mentioned things in hadith. But on the contrary, people who go for Hajj or Umrah, they should not trim their nails during the Ihram. If they trim the nails in ignorance, then there is no penalty, but doing deliberately they have to pay the penalty as one portion food (750gr) for each nail. If pilgrims trim the nails of both hands deliberately then they have to pay the Kaffarah of one sheep. And if they trim the nails of both hands and both feet in one session, so in such situation Kaffarah is one sheep but if it occurs in two sessions then Kaffarah will be of two sheep.

If pilgrims in the state of Ihram trim five nails of the hand and five nails of the foot, then they have to pay the Kaffarah of one portion of food for each of the nail. The penalty is similarly charged if they trim not more than ten nails. If the pilgrim has more than ten nails of hand and trims them all, so he/she has to pay the Kaffarah of one sheep. But if he/she trims some of his/her main nails and extra nail, so he/she has to pay a penalty of one portion of food. Women having big nail are apparently informed by Hajj and Umrah Travel Agent UK to cut the nails before wearing the Ihram. It is compulsory for each Muslim either man or woman that they must trim their hands in common days but as they have appeared for pilgrimage then they should avoid cutting the nails both of hands and feet. Hazrat Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that there are five acts of fitra (usual disposition):

1) Circumcision
2) Removing the hair below the navel
3) Trimming the mustache
4) Cutting the nails
5) Plucking the hair under the arms.

Hazrat Abu Hurairah (RA) has also related, “before going to Jummah (Friday Prayer) the Messenger of Allah (SWT) trimmed his nails and mustache.'
