History That Changed The Story Of Harley Davidson Giving It A Brand Name
The much adored Harley Davidson you own in Brisbane is not something which came out of a huge factory in a bunch and hit the roads with high ambition. The starting of it was much humble than you might think and was first developed by the 21 year old boy William Harley and his friend Arthur Davidson.
The first prototype was a 116cc engine coming out from 21 years old boys. It is really unacceptable, isn’t it? But this is the ultimate truth. It took them three years to produce a workable motorcycle which was just the beginning. In their second attempt, it was a 405cc motorcycle which the boys themselves tagged to be the real Harley Davidson prototype as they were very happy with the outcome. This time it was not just a bicycle installed with an engine but the look of a motorcycle. The look completed the idea of the modern day motorcycle and even today the same shape is being used with slight modification keeping the basics same. There was no high-end manufacturing unit for the bothers where they could take the help of industrial tools. The entire project was undertaken in an outside shed at their own property. However, by 1905 the brothers were giving out a limited number of motorcycles to the public, three in a year to be precise. When the orders began to increase they felt the need of expanding their present shed, which compelled them to move their workstation to a bigger area.
By 1907 they were selling their motorcycle to the police departments and were making 150 units per year. It was the exact year which witnessed something which made history. An 880cc engine having V-shaped twin engine was rolled out by the brothers and was displayed at an automobile show to be reviewed by the public. By 1909 the number of motorcycles sold reached 1000. It is not just that they were making revenue but had also established themselves to be businesspersons.
The best was yet to come and the biggest opportunity knocked at their doorstep during the World War I. Where the world was witnessing battles and destructions the Harley Davidson brothers were ordered to serve the country with their motorcycles. They manufactured as many as 20,000 motorcycles for the war and this was the turning point in their business. The image of the motorcycles was no more limited to America but the entire world learnt about the potentials. By 1920 the motorcycles were used and sent to 67 countries around the world with some special customisations as well. In World War II as well the Harley Davidson served the American army along with the Canadian military and the Soviet Union.
The fame of the motorcycles reached its zenith when these were used in the movies. Different versions of the motorcycle are still being used in different movies. Hence you can very well understand the fact that the showroom of Harley Davidson you see in your Brisbane neighbourhood has a fan base all over the world.
