The 2019 Peugeot 208 has been unveiled ahead of the Geneva Motor Show. This baby hatch has a new muscular profile, the cabin has an upmarket feel, and there will be an electric variant to look forward to. Let’s take a closer look at what this latest 208 has to offer and what the Australian availability will be in the future.

At a Glance

The new Peugeot supermini has an aesthetic appeal similar to the latest 508 model. Peugeot is working hard on their designs to build a natural and similar appeal across the range. The headlamps have a three strip claw, the outer claw runs into the bumper, and a 208 jewel badge is presented on the bonnet. The lights are heavily influenced by the latest 508 and 3008 models, and they are linked with a black strip. The rear is pert and perky with a wider and lower profile compared to the outgoing models. The rear window looks rounder, and in some ways, it’s reminiscent of the classic Peugeot 205 GTi from back in the day.

Under the Skin

The new Peugeot 208 is underpinned by the latest Peugeot Citroen Common Modular Platform or CMP. This chassis is 100 kg lighter than the outgoing models, but perhaps more interestingly, it's an ideal platform for an all electric 208.

In this configuration, the power would be provided by a 100kW electric motor that is supplied by a 50 kWh lithium ion battery pack. The all electric range on a typical WLTP test cycle is estimated to be 340km. Charging this 208 EV would allow charging to 80% in only half an hour when the correct charging station is used, and the battery pack will be guaranteed for eight years or 161,000km (whichever comes first).

Of course, if you don’t want a 208 EV, there will be petrol or diesel engines available. The petrol power plants will be available in three guises; they are 56kW (75hp), 75kW (100hp) and 97kW (130hp) respectively. The entry level engine will be paired with a five speed manual, the mid spec will have either a six speed manual or eight speed automatic, and the range topping engine will get an eight speed self shifting transmission only. The diesel variant is a 1.5L four cylinder engine that generates 75kW (100hp) of power, and this is paired with a six speed manual transmission.

Peugeot 208 Safety Tech

The new 208 gets plenty of active safety tech, such as full parking assist, adaptive cruise control with stop/go functionality, AEB, lane keep assist, traffic sign recognition, blind spot monitoring, driver attention monitoring, lane centring, and an electric parking brake.

Australian Availability

The new 208 is set for a European launch in late 2019, and this is far too early to speculate on an Australian release day. Peugeot is currently gauging the customer interest in a 208 EV, and if the demand is there, it will be released at the same time.
