Evaluating Ergonomic Task Seating
For most ergonomists and health and safety officers, a well-designed work chair is considered one of the most important components of an ergonomic workstation.
But, with so many types of work chairs available today, how should you make an informed decision when it comes time to make a purchase?
What types of adjustments are essential to maintaining the health and comfort of computer users? This is one of the most frequently asked questions by the managers of today's institutions regarding the assessment of the division of labour.
To begin, consider the functional objectives of a work chair. First, a well-designed chair should be adaptable enough to accommodate at least 90% of the workforce (the chair should be a fifth percentile woman versus a 95th percentile male).
The adjustable height, seat depth, backrest height / lumbar support and armrest height seats make it possible to satisfy most users if they fit within the recommended adjustment ranges (see box).
Adjustments that go beyond those mentioned often complicate the operation of the chair and have received little or no validation from the point of view of ergonomics.
Then, a chair should promote the movement of the spine. Fixed and straight postures, however optimal, will generate static muscle contractions and subsequent discomfort.
Spinal discs do not have a direct blood supply and are fed by osmosis, a process that is best facilitated by movement. It is therefore essential that the record allows a person to move freely in a range of supported postures.
This concept is often called "dynamic sitting". Voltage control knobs and hard-to-adjust backrest locks impede movement and can complicate ergonomic chair operation.
Today's new seats feature self-adjusting tilt mechanisms that automatically adjust the backrest tension based on body weight. This technology greatly simplifies chair operation while maintaining the health and comfort of the user's spine.
Third, a well-designed chair must be intuitive to use. The armchairs of the '80s and' 90s became so complicated to adjust that few users could correctly identify a single setting.
A 1995 study conducted by Martin Helander, a renowned ergonomics professor at Singapore's Nanyang Technological University, found that less than 2% of the surveyed population was able to correctly identify the purpose of the voltage adjustment knob.
All adjustments must be possible when the user is seated in his chair. The controls should be close at hand and should never require excessive force.
The biggest mistake that facility managers typically make when evaluating the division of labour is to allow employees to make decisions based on short-term use. Decisions, in this case, are more likely to be made on the basis of the aesthetics of the chair rather than the comfort of the chair. Workers should be able to compare each chair over several days.
The New York-based Cornell University Ergonomics Assessment Form, developed by Professor Alan Hedge, Director of Cornell's Human Factors and Ergonomics Research Laboratory, is designed to help workers to make objective and informed headquarters decisions.
