There are several religions around the world and each has its own beliefs and traditions but a common thread that binds each one of them is their search for peace, salvation, and spirituality. Significantly, as per the Hindu religion finding salvation in this lifetime is essential for a serene and contented rebirth.
While the Hindu scriptures mention a number of places to find liberation, the
Muktinath Temple in Nepal has a special significance for both Hindus and Buddhists. The temple is often regarded as a symbol of synchronization between the Hindus and the Buddhists.
The Architecture
The pagoda style temple is an old structure and is located in the Manang district of Nepal at a height of 3710 meters. Muktinath is formed by joining two different words--‘Mukti’ meaning ‘liberation’ (often called “Nirvana”) and ‘Nath’ meaning ‘Lord’ since the place is dedicated to Lord Vishnu who is considered the lord of liberation, especially among Hindus.
Why visit the Temple?
There is a popular belief in most of the South East Asian countries that a man must attain spiritual salvation before death. As per the popular belief in the Hindu religion, taking the Muktinath tour after Kailash Mansarovar Yatra liberates an individual for a lifetime and later.
Deities and Temple Premises
As much as the temple has a religious significance, it embodies natural beauty as well. Regarded as one of the oldest temples, Muktinath has some incredible architecture and the main idol inside the temple is of Lord Vishnu. It is a life-size statue, made in gold.
There are also bronze images of Bhoodevi or goddess earth, goddess Sita and Saraswati, Garuda, Lava Kusha and the Sapta Rishis. The temple is also regarded as one among 51 sites of Shakti Peetha.
The famous Kali Gandaki River flows near the temple which is the source of Shaligram Shila stones that are considered as an incarnation of Lord Vishnu and worshipped by Hindus across the world. The water from the river is directed to flow out of the 108 water spouts that are built behind the main temple. They are made in stone and are Bull shaped. The pilgrims who take up the Muktinath tour make it a point to take a holy walk under all of these 108 water spouts. They are popularly known as Muktidhara.
Right in front of the temple, there are two small ponds that collect the water from all the 108 water spouts. Pilgrims can choose to take a holy dip in these ponds. The number 108 has a religious significance due to 12 different zodiac signs and 9 planets.
There is a small monastery at the entrance of the main Muktinath temple; it is called the Mebar Lha Gomba or the monastery of ‘miraculous fire’. There are three different natural gas fires that come out of water, rock, and earth inside the monastery and the Hindus worship it as Jwala Mai or the goddess of fire. The monastery is dedicated to Guru Rimpoche and is considered with high reverence by both the Hindus and Buddhists. The Hindus visiting the temple do not miss to visit the monastery too.
Nearby Attractions
While the temple is surrounded in lush natural beauty, the path that takes one there is no less. The muktinath yatra
from Jomsom to Muktinath will introduce you to a majestically beautiful village Kaagbeni that has its own religious significance.
Kaagbeni literally translates to the confluence of two rivers—Kaali Gandaki and Jhong.
The village is a holy site and is visited by devotees to offer respect to their ancestor’s spirits. For the same reason, the place is also known as Pitri Tirtha. Devotees visiting this place have a firm belief that their ancestors will find a place in heaven if they offer prayers here.
Muktinath Temple is a place of belief, beauty, and divinity, a must visit in Nepal.
