The Annapurna Trek can be undertaken by people of all ages and fitness levels but just a little planning initially can go a long way in making the trek enjoyable and memorable for a lifetime.
5 things to know to take up the Annapurna Circuit Trek successfully
1. Plan the trek at an ideal time
Every trek in Nepal has an ideal time when it must be visited since the weather conditions are ideal for trekking then. The same is true for the Annapurna Circuit Trek as well. The two best times for trekking here are October-November and April-May. The weather at these times is clear and dry which makes it easier to trek. Trekking at this time is much easier when compared to other times of the year.
2. Take care of your diet and health
And this holds true for not only while you are on the trek but a few weeks before you take the trek as well. Ensure that you follow a healthy diet and a very standard fitness routine for a few weeks before you take up the trek. And when it comes to the food on the Annapurna Trek, you will not be disappointed at all.
From their traditional Nepali staple Dal bhat to the customary Apple Pie, there is a lot in between as well. The other common recipe that is offered at tea houses is the garlic soup, a tried and tested remedy for altitude sickness. Ensure that you eat well, eat local and take a lot of rest while on the Annapurna trek.
3. Take it slow
The Annapurna circuit trek is an enjoyable experience but it can also become a little complicated at times. And the one thing that you will need to remember at such difficult times is to take it slowly and stay positive. There will be several times when you will need to push your limits, remind yourself of the purpose that you are there for. Remember not to tire or slog your body by trying to be speedy when you have all the energy.
4. Do not underestimate the altitude sickness
Remember, altitude sickness can affect anyone, irrespective of the age or the level of fitness so it is absolutely unwise to underestimate the issue and be prepared for it anytime and anywhere above 2500m. Apart from taking the medicine for altitude sickness, drink lots of water to stay hydrated, keep it slow and learn about the various symptoms of altitude sickness to be better prepared.
5. Avoid buying bottled water
The bottled drinking water available on the trail is not just dead-expensive but is also the main reason for cluttered plastic bottles in the higher altitudes. Try and refrain from their use as much as possible. It is advisable to carry a steel reusable water bottle or a flask that can be filled at various drinking stations where purified water is available or you can choose to use purification tablets as well.
While the trail is all about adventure, hiking and some spectacular views for you, do not forget that it is home for someone. Respect the locals, learn about their culture and be warm and loving to them. After all, we all want to be remembered for good.
