The United States tend to be facing a major surge in the aging population in every state in the nation over the next few decades. According to the article, it shows that among the US elderly in 1995, women did outnumber men three to two. While at the age of 85 and over, there were five women to every two men. High female life expectancy together with the idea that men are older than their spouses does contribute to the high proportion of elderly women who are living alone. The elderly men are likely to live in families, and the elderly living alone tend to have families nearby and other companionship. Also, those who live along tend to have a higher tendency of using community services that those who live with others. The elderly women are more likely to live alone, and widowhood can be a contributing factor to this idea. Widowhood does increase with age among the elderly, and it is very high for women than men.
Statistics indicate that one of every three residents in a nursing home is an oldest old woman. In 1990, 5% of all the elderly persons lived in nursing homes, and the likelihood of living in nursing homes does increase with age. The elderly population in the nursing homes did increase by 55% from 1970 to 1980 and by 29% from 1980 to 1990. In 1990, four out of five residents in the homes were at least 75 years or older, and seven out of ten were women. The accelerating growth of a population that is 85 years and over and also the increasing participation of women in labor force does indicate that the number and also the proportion of elderly living in institutions are going to rise. Whether the elderly get care in nursing homes, paid help in their homes, or from families, there will be more people experiencing the emotional, the physical, or economic stress of long-term care for the elderly persons.
Statistics indicate that the poverty rates among the elderly have been declined. As of 1995, the rate of poverty among elderly blacks and Hispanics was higher than the rates of white elderly. Based on the data, there are higher poverty rates among elderly women (14%) than elderly men (6%). The elderly black, white, and Hispanic women have higher poverty rates than elderly black, white, and Hispanic men respectively.
The education attainment does offer an indication of the health and economic status in older age. A good education is healthier in the long run and even better off regarding economics. Low education attainment is normally associated with poverty. The elderly people are less likely to have completed their high school education when compared to those aged 35 to 64. Within the elderly population, there are significant differences in educational attainment of younger and the older elderly. Statistics indicate that about 67% of people aged 65 to 69 did complete at least high school when compared with only 52% of person ages 75 and over. The educational attainment of the elderly in the 21st century is going to be higher than that of the present day elderly as more people are now completing their education. The gender composition of the older workers tends to be changing. While the participation of older men in the labor force is decreasing, the participation of older women as increased. Women are becoming a large share of an older work force.
