School Counseling Scenario

This scenario of Sandra, a nine-year-old female student who feels unsafe at school is addressed using the humanistic-existential approach. Humanistic-existential approaches are effective in this scenario because they emphasize the importance of personal experience. The theory used by the counselor to solve the issues of the client is the person centered counseling. Person centered counseling also referred to as client-centered counseling is based on the assertion that three primary conditions namely genuine empathy, unconditional regard as well as counselor genuineness are enough to influence client change. This approach developed by Carl Rogers (1942, 1951) assumes that individuals tend naturally toward positive growth (Rathus, 2011). The emphasis of this approach is on emotional and relational processes that influence change instead of the use of specific techniques to accomplish desired outcomes. The approach will stress on individual empowerment and individual decision making thus assisting the client to deal with the problem. The client, Sandra in this scenario has show signs of distress that include withdrawing and been distracted, as noticed by her fourth-grade teacher. Also, Sandra tends to bite own pencil and wring her hands. After a session with the client, the counselor has been able to know the problem, in which Sandra is feeling unsafe at school as a result of the recent school shooting events that she witnessed on the news. The person-centered counselor will focus on the meaning as well as the feeling of the client, in which they will encourage the patient to talk freely and eventually self-direct them to think through a positive direction. Person-centered counseling is effective in this scenario as it assists the client to experience their-in-the moment internal experiences thus exposing the facades living behind and the socially imposed should that may be affecting their lives. A positive outcome in this scenario will be achieved when the client feels secure at school and stops the signs in which they express reservation. The counselor may also consult Sandra’s teacher and parent to assure her that school is safe and that the events she saw on the news will not happen again, especially not her school.
A fundamental strength of using the patient centered therapy for a student case is that the counselor focuses on the individual student and helps them in their growth and improvement process. The therapy session will provide the student with an opportunity to express them freely without fearing to be judged and to enable the counselor view the problem in the client’s view. Knowing the client on a personal level assists to build a good rapport thus promoting cooperation in the session. The counselor will help the client to get to know oneself. It is hence important since it is associated with openness to experiences, self-trust and internal source of evaluation. The person-centered counseling is also advantageous because the counselor focuses on the present events rather than the past. Also, person-centered therapy is considered to be associated with benefits such as clarity and consistency especially since the therapist’s feelings, values, and interests are left out during the session (Coon & Mitterer, 2012). However, the approach has a limitation in that the power of a client to influence won change must be matched with efforts to deal with external oppression thus limiting their ability to accomplish their potential.
The attitudes of the student need to be attended during the counseling session to influence a positive outcome. The counselor will aim at empowering the student to deal with the fear they have and hence stopping the signs of withdrawal and distraction. In the school-based counseling, the counselor will conduct repeated counseling sessions to the student.
