Enlarged adenoids and tonsils are a concern in young children as they can be a major source of recurrent infections like a sore throat, middle ear infections, and sinusitis. This can majorly affect the health and growth of small children in more than one way. Homoeopathy offers a very safe and effective way to cure enlarged adenoids and tonsils and can save the little ones from the surgeon’s knife. Homeopathic philosophy has always stood by the view that whenever possible the tonsils and adenoids should be saved as they are an important defense tissue of our body and provide the children with the much-required Immunity

Adenoids and tonsils are a collection of lymphoid tissue (defense tissue) whose main function is to produce defense cells and fight infections like bacteria and virus. Like tonsils, adenoids help the body by trapping harmful bacteria and viruses that one breathes in or swallows. They are located (tonsils) on both the side of the throat and (adenoids) higher up where the nose and the throat meet (also called as nasopharynx). Although tonsils are visible when the mouth is wide open, adenoids cannot be seen like this. Both the adenoids and the tonsils get enlarged when they get infected with bacteria. Mostly they return back to their original size once the infection is over, however in some cases they tend to remain enlarged when infections are frequent or chronic.

Although some amount of enlargement is considered normal in preschool kids when grossly enlarged, tonsils and adenoids can cause a lot of complications. The most common complications are frequent sore throats, chronic ear infections, nose bleed and hearing loss due to obstruction of the Eustachian tube and accumulation of fluid in the middle ear. Enlarged adenoids give a typical ‘pinched nose’ quality to the voice. They can also affect the shape of the child’s palate and the teeth. A major fallout of the enlarged adenoids is that the child may have difficulty in breathing during sleep leading to a condition called as Obstructive Sleep Apnea. This is a condition in which along with snoring the child goes through brief periods of pauses in breathing during sleep. This can lead to low oxygen levels with daytime sleepiness.

Enlarged adenoids can be easily identified with careful observation. They usually lead to difficulty in breathing, which may eventually become difficult through the nose and also become noisy. Children often become mouth-breathers.T he voice quality also changes to become ‘pinched nose type’. Snoring during sleep is a very important clue for identifying enlarged adenoids in kids. Sleep should be carefully observed for brief pauses in breathing.

Homeopathic medicines can be a great boon for the kids with these enlarged adenoids and tonsils as not only do they cure the enlargements, they also enhance the body’s resistance to fight the recurrent infections
