This article by Roberts and Flores was written in the year 2009. It examines the way three high schools in California have managed to sustain achievement in algebra for the various subgroups of all their students. It provides an overview of a study that analyzes the techniques or strategies that maintained the achievements for mathematics and science in these schools. This study suggests that there is a great potential in high schools for the improvement of efficacy algebra without making any significant reform restructuring or a reform of the overall school system, and this supports strong teacher leadership. The authors give a highlight of the components of an effective algebra program as well as the reform initiatives that can produce higher algebra achievement for all students. Additionally, they identify leadership structures for school and how the school leaders can amass resources for increased and sustained results in algebra.
There are various concepts that come up from this article, and these include professional development, teacher collaboration, and technological competitiveness. The algebraic concepts should be emphasized strongly in middle school because that is where most students start being introduced to algebra. We also learn that the lack of algebra achievement makes students lose out on opportunities to enroll into college and get into high paying jobs due to poor performance in this area. There is a need to increase the algebra and science capacity of all students to the United States. That shows a sense of urgency as well as responsibility in every American classroom starting with kindergarten through to grade 12 and beyond. A school-wide collaboration and commitment among all departments is necessary if the achievements in mathematics are to be attained.
