How Do Waste Heat Recovery Boilers Work?

A waste heat recovery system recovers heat with sources with high energy potential such as hot flue gases or steam from cooling towers. These systems help to create new and ultra-efficient renewable energy. Heat recovery systems tap into energy that already exists thereby maximising available energy and reducing the collective impact on the environment, including the heat that is lost to the environment every day.

Steel plants typically use this heat treatment process to increase the production of the plant with lower fuel demand. Waste heat from the exhaust gas of different processes or heat that comes from the exhaust stream of a conditioning unit is also used to preheat gas.

Without a green technology like heat recovery, in an office for instance air would circulate all around, become stale and then get replaced by cold air that is heated by the ventilation system. A waste heat recovery system doesn’t replace the need for a boiler or other heating equipment, it does increase their efficiency by recycling warm air ensuring that you get the most out of it.

In residential facilities, installing a heat recovery system can significantly reduce energy bills. A ventilation system facilitates the flow and supply of fresh and warm air circulating within the house.

In businesses and industry, heat recovery is at the heart of making the workplace and factory floor a far more efficient place.

Heat recovery ventilation works independently of normal heating systems in a facility. Every room has ventilation ducts with filters that transfer air in and out of that space. This air is finally lead up to the heat exchanger that is placed on the roof of a building.

A heat exchanger is the brain of the heat recovery system. It moves stale air through hundreds of small pipes while drawing cold air in from outside to other ducts. The stale air and cold air flow past each other without mixing, but heat is drawn from the stale air to the cold air. This heat is sent back to the pipes and into the rooms. Stale air without the heat, is sent out to the atmosphere.

Technology for heat recovery systems has dramatically improved in the recent years. Systems that are available today can extract up to   90% of heat from stale air and turn it into fresh air circulating back into the system.
