Schools As Agents Of Socialization

Schooling is an important life path that entails the transmission of culture to the children. When a child is born, he is, or she is dependent on the parent for survival. The child has no clue about life, survival and fending for her or himself. At the age of three, parents admit their children to school. There is a general perception that children must attend school so that they can acquire an education and get empowered. However, there is another critical reason why children need an education. Education is important because it teaches children how to socialize and thus to enhance their ability to interact with people in formal and informal settings. Schools are, therefore, agents of socialization that enhance a student’s social skills thus shaping an individual’s socializations skills through to adulthood.
Schools serve as the platform for transmitting culture thus a student is exposed t the values, language, literature, religion, belief sand practices. A student is also exposed to interpersonal relations values with clear indications of what the society considers improper or power. The child thus acquires knowledge of how to behave and handle him or herself in public and while interacting with family, friends and the community. Schools also enhance group participation; a skill that leads to the development of a team player rather than a person who operates alone. When a child joins a school for the first time, he or she finds him or herself in the company of other students. The first encounter is uncomfortable because all students are strangers to each other. However, it is from the school that the child learns the art of making friends and working with other people. In school, students are assigned group tasks that require students to team up. A child that had not been exposed to working with others or sharing of items gets an opportunity to acquire the critical life skill (Saldana, 2013). A child’s social skills improve while at school, and it is a skill that the student needs through to adulthood. Interaction is an unavoidable activity as it is the only way that tasks are completed. Even at the workplace, an employee needs to interact with his or her colleagues so as to complete tasks/ projects.
Schools also enhance language formation which in turns improves an individual’s communication skills. Language and communication are critical socializations skills that individuals require. Schools build a person’s social skills as they get to polish their language skills. It is from the school that a student learns about issues such as mannerism, how to address people and the appropriate use of language. Language enables individuals to express themselves and be heard (Gooden, & Kearns, 2013). It is by sharpening their language that an individual can communicate with other people and engage in sensible dialogue. Language enables an individual to express him or herself in informal settings such as at home or among friends as well as formal settings such as the workplace. Schools also expose students to information regarding how they should speak at different scenarios. Social norms exist to guide people on how they should conduct themselves. Social norms on language etiquette provide the dos and don’ts of language use. Schools form the ideal platform from where individuals are taught on how to speak to the elderly, the words, phrases or statements that must be used or avoided (Rosenya, 2012).
The world has turned into a global village thus students move across countries in pursuit of quality education. Classes are now more diverse than before, and students get to acquire to critical social skills of appreciating diversity. Exposure to a diversity of culture is critical as it enables an individual to be more appreciative of the differences that people manifests (Bianchi, 2000). The diversity of cultures in learning institutions offers a learning experience to students. Students thus complete their studies prepared to face a diverse world. Individuals already exposed to a diversity of cultures have an easier time blending with other cultures. Exposure also reduces the risk of stereotyping and discrimination that arises mainly when the public is uninformed about other cultures.
Schools are agents of socialization as they mold an individual to be a responsible adult. Instructors are equipped with skills and knowledge that they use to empower the students to become an individual that the society recognizes and appreciates. It is at the school where an individual’s social skills are shaped. A student learns to interact with other people. It is also at the school that students get exposed to other cultures. Schools also give individuals an opportunity to learn and acquire interpersonal and communication skills thus enhancing their ability to interact with other people. The schools receive students in their most raw form especially when they join schools at the kindergarten level. It is the school that shapes them to become responsible and law abiding citizens by instilling in them the values, beliefs, and practices of the society.
