Journal Entry History
Religion in Kansas was written by Gary Entz in 2005 to shed light on the topic that even though the religious life in Kansas is marked with dogmatism and moral it is not at all doctrinal. Entz is a history teacher at McPherson College and holds a Ph.D. in the same field from the University of Utah. The presentation of a historical account on the Kansas religion theme including the making of comparisons and distinctions between the religion in other parts, Entz enhances my understanding of the theme and validates his thesis.
Justine wrote his article on language and loyalty in 2014. He recounts the effect of anti-German sentiments during WWI on the German language as well as the literature teachings in the US universities. Instead of the language being used as something to unite us, it is being used as a weapon to fight loyalty. Justine discusses the forms anti-German sentiments took, efforts of German immigrants in America to evade violence perpetrated by Patriots and the reasons for eliminating German classes in Bethel College and Baker University of Kansas. The provides the facts that support his argument and helps to understand the theme. “Kansas in the Grippe” has been written by Johnson in 1992. She says that despite the warning of Spanish influenza early enough to take the appropriate measures to control the disease, the US government did not heed the alarm. Johnson sidelines the disease with the victory that the US was enjoying then and gives an account of how the disease swept the American people especially in Kansas.
Gossen (2011) also gives an account of gender and vigilante in the Kansas Coalfield in the period between 1921 and 1922. Gossen presents the Marching of women that took place in the Coalfields in Kansas and says that even though it devastated the economy, it was a way that the women used to express the vision of their American citizenship and to march into the traditionally male-dominated jobs or responsibilities. The historical account supported by exact time periods, primary data and secondary data helps us to clearly comprehend what took place and how that is linked to the theme. “Emanuel and Marcet haldeman..” article of 2006 discusses two couples that are among the most famous couples in the world: Emanuel and Marcet. Even though Emanuel came from a poor background and Marcet from a wealthy one, they did not suffer conservatism from their upbringing environments. They came from totally different backgrounds but their ideas merged and they left behind a legacy besides playing a large role in America’s intellectual history. The article shows us that it is the idea that people have that matter in life.
