There’s a lot of buzz at the moment about the Internet of Things (or IoT) and its impact on various things. But what is the Internet of Things? How does it work, how much is it important?
As per Wikipedia – “The Internet of things (IoT) is the network of devices such as vehicles, and home appliances that contain electronics, software, actuators, and connectivity which allows these things to connect, interact and exchange data.”
The term "Internet of Things" was first used by Kevin Ashton of Procter and Gamble, in an article (1999) to explain RFID tags importance in improving supply chains efficiency. During those times, the idea of gathering data in electronic format in a warehouse or production facility to PCs for analysis was still new.
IoT involves extending Internet connectivity beyond standard devices, such as desktops, laptops, smartphones and tablets, to various devices and everyday objects. Embedded with technology, these devices can communicate and interact over the Internet, and they can be remotely monitored and controlled. In general, these devices use internet protocol (IP), the same protocol that recognizes PCs over the internet and allows them to communicate with one another. The goal behind the internet of things is to have devices that can send data/report automatically in real time, improving efficiency and bringing important information to the surface more quickly than a system depending on human intervention.
What excites me
The Internet of Things would bring new dimensions in all scope of fields. For example, in medicine, the connected devices can help medical professionals monitor patients inside and outside of a hospital. Data analyzers can then evaluate the data to help practitioners adjust treatments and improve patient outcomes.
Among the different Internet of Things examples the following amazes me.
In healthcare sector connected contact lenses and activity trackers are quite interesting. Connected contact lenses with inbuilt sensors can analyze tears and provide the information to doctors about their patients. It can check the glucose level of a person and also work on an eye’s focus. Similarly, activity trackers help doctors to monitor & get accurate information of their patients related to fatigue, appetite, heart, pulse, temperature, blood pressure etc.
Another product which excites me is the Google Glass. It transformed the functionality limits of eyeglasses. It features a head-mounted display in the form of eyeglasses. The Google glasses work as a hands-free smartphone, letting users access the mobile internet browser, camera, maps, calendar, and other apps by voice commands. It can help you see your flight information right at the moment of entering the airport, scan a barcode to see the complete information, get directions to a shop in a new city and so on.
It is a giant network of interconnected objects that can possibly significantly increment the accessibility of data. With the advancement of technologies such as artificial intelligence systems that are capable of communicating and sharing data, can be applied to any industry to achieve greater results and performance.
IoT deployments are challenging. Multiple operational teams & business units, apart from IT teams, should be included for an effective implementation. Being a generally new idea, choosing a proper IoT solution provider can be a challenging job.

From my teenage time, I had a quench to solve problems and loved leadership. Starting my career in relation management, ignited my passion for managing people. While managing I realized technology needs to be incorporated to keep pace with the changing world & do my work efficiently. Simultaneously, I was getting addicted towards Information Technology. That’s when I moved to software development arena. The reason many people are dissatisfied with cubicle work (as I was) is caused by a major disconnect between the work that you actually do, and the result it produces in the world. When you’re blindly following instructions handed down from high that are loaded with corporate jargon, whether you’re passionate about the actual what you’re doing becomes irrelevant. This encouraged me to take up the challenge of approaching the clients, communicating with them, understand their business & issues, suggest them IT solutions. On the other hand I managed teams who were responsible to execute the solutions. I felt happy as I was doing what I loved to i.e. solve problems through IT solutions & manage team through healthy leadership.
