Where Does That Heat Come From?

A nice cool and quiet system
Water cooling has other advantages. Since the heat in a well-laid system is discharged from the cabinet to the outside, the temperature in the cabinet will also drop, because the processor is the most important source of heat in the cabinet. Water cooling thus leads to a lower temperature of the entire computer. One factor that is often paid less attention is the noise production. Because the number of fans to cool the PC can be significantly reduced (up to 1 or 2) the noise level will decrease dramatically. A better cooled system with less noise production!

Water cooling is the future
Water cooling of processors and other parts that have to process a lot of power is becoming a serious matter and several manufacturers are bringing stuff on the market that allows you, if you do not have two left hands, to provide your PC with water cooling in no time. Nowadays there are even handy kits on the market, which contain all necessary parts and a comprehensive manual. Installing water cooling is nowadays almost as easy as installing a new card.

A water cooling system

What do you need at least for installing a water-cooled system? That is not so bad:
- A cooling block.
- A few pieces of water hose.
- A water pump.
- A water reservoir.
- A radiator.
These sections are examined in more detail in the following sections.

Cooling blocks for cooling your processor

Removing the heat from the processor
The cooling block replaces the existing cooling plate on the processor and aims to release the heat from the processor to the water flowing through the cooling block. A water-cooled block is much smaller than the large cooling plate with fan that is now on the processor.
Cooling blocks are made of copper or aluminum. Copper conducts the heat slightly better than aluminum, but a well-designed aluminum block takes away more heat from the processor than a bad copper block.

But, anyway, every water block functions much better than any air cooler!
Cooling blocks are available in various versions and of course also for all processor models. The figure below shows the HeathKiller IV as an examplefrom Aquatuning . On the upper side there are two nipples with which you can attach the water hoses for the supply and discharge of the cooling water to the part absolutely leak-free. The underside of the cooling block is of course absolutely smooth, because this bottom plate is of course attached to the housing of the processor.
This photo immediately shows one big advantage of water cooling. This cooling block is only 66 mm by 59 mm by 17 mm. A huge difference with the radiator of the first picture of this article! See Electronic Device Designing
If you think that such a simple component also has a simple price tag, you are wrong. For this water cooler you pay a juicy seventy euros! It arrives on a long waterway
If you open such a cooling block you will notice that the copper or aluminum block has been milled out in a zigzag pattern. That makes sense, because the water has to flow through the block as long as possible to remove as much heat as possible. These channels do have the disadvantage that the friction between the water and the cooling element becomes quite high and therefore requires considerable pumping to keep the flow of water going.
Here is the difference in quality
There are considerable price differences between the offered cooling blocks. The care that has been spent on the internal finishing of the cooling block has a lot to do with this. Sometimes the channels are quite sloppily milled with not too slippery walls, sometimes these cool corridors are really perfectly smooth. It will be clear that in the first case the flow of the cooling water is rather hindered. Nowadays there are even manufacturers who use fully cast aluminum blocks, where the finishing of the internal channel is really perfect. These aluminum coolers are, however, very expensive.

Mount on the processor
Mounting a water-cooled cooling block on the processor is just as easy as fitting a classic cooling plate. Of course you have to make sure that the correct type for the processor model is brought into the house. All cooling blocks are supplied with comprehensive manuals and confirmation sets for various processors. The figure below shows how such a cooling block with the usual clamp is located at the base of the processor.

Various versions
Each cooling block is equipped with two connection nipples for the supply and return of the cooling water. There are cooling blocks where these nipples are on the top side and cooling blocks where they sit on the side. The second model has the advantage that the water can flow more easily through the zigzag channels in the block. In the figure below an example is a cooling block that is offered by various Chinese mail order companies for a price around € 15.00. This cooling block has dimensions of only 40 mm x 40 mm x 12 mm and can be used, for example, as additional cooling that dissipates the heat of normal cooling plates outside the housing of a device.
