One of the widely used analgesics in the US is Tramadol. It is effective pain relief solution and belongs to an opioid class of analgesics. There are different strengths of Tramadol which are prescribed by the doctor depending on the severity of the pain. Before we look into the details about how this medicine works in chronic pain, severe pain and back pain we need to know the basic mechanism of action of Tramadol.

Mode of action of Tramadol:

Tramadol is an opioid analgesic. It works on the opioid receptors. It binds with these receptors and blocks the opioid receptors. As a result, the sensation of pain will not reach the receptors and the patient will get relief from pain. Tramadol is available in 50 mg and 100 mg strength. Depending on the severity of the pain the doctor will decide which strength tablet needs to be prescribed.

Tramadol in Chronic Pain:

You can say that chronic pain is one which lasts for more than 3 to 6 months from its onset or one which disrupts normal life and one which goes beyond the healing period. According to certain studies Tramadol can be used for moderate to severe pains. It blocks the opioid receptors and it also prevents the reuptake of norepinephrine and serotonin. Depending on the severity of the pain the doctor will prescribe Tramadol 50 mg to 100 mg every 4 to 6 hours and the total dosage must not be more than 400 mg per day.

Tramadol for Back Pain:

This is also a medication which has been prescribed by a doctor for back pain. As compared to other opioid drugs this medicine has less scope for abuse. The immediate release form of Tramadol is used for back pain. It is also prescribed for patients who are suffering from sciatica and for management of pain after spine surgery. In the case of back pain the doctor will prescribe a lower dose of Tramadol and if required will increase the dose. Here too the total dose must not be more than 400 mg per day.

Tramadol for Severe pain:

People who are suffering from severe pain are also given Tramadol for pain relief. In the case of severe pain normally a higher dose of Tramadol will be prescribed by the doctor. The patient must follow the doctor’s prescription strictly.

Beware of the side effects:

Like all other medications here too there will be common to severe side effects. These can be blurred vision, headaches, nausea etc. It is important to inform the doctor immediately if any of the side effects are observed. It is equally important to tell the doctor if you are allergic to any medicine. If the patient is taking any other medicine then the same needs to be informed to the doctor as there are chances of a drug interaction of Tramadol with other medicines and this can be risky. An overdose of Tramadol has to be avoided under all circumstances as it can prove to be harmful and at times it may even turn out to be fatal. Substance abuse also needs to be avoided under all circumstances.

Tramadol is an analgesic which can be used for pain management. Whether it is moderate to severe pain or chronic pain or back pain this medicine can be used. The strength and the dosage will depend on the type of pain and the severity of the pain. Keep in mind that Tramadol is a prescription drug. So, consult a good doctor and only when he prescribes the medicine the same must be taken. The doctor will take into consideration the overall condition of the patient. He will take into consideration the different factors like the age of a patient, the medical and physical condition of the patient and based on these factors the doctor will prescribe the strength and dosage of Tramadol.
