Abstract
Database backup and disaster planning are essential aspects in disaster management. Their effective implementation increases the confidence of doing business. Database backups are a representation of the copy of data in the primary drives thereby useful in the restore processes after a disaster. Disaster planning entails all the activities performed before, during, and after a disaster as mitigation measures on how to address a disaster. The research paper provides a discussion of database backup, and disaster planning, as well as the importance of integrating them. Also included is the impact of their ineffective implementation.

Database Backup
Databases are the main storage files for the data and information used in an organization. They act as crucial drives to the operations of the organization since they have linked data files for specific purposes. Databases require being easy to access, manage, and update. The contribution of databases in the affairs of an organization requires that there be an efficient method of backing up all the information stored in them. Disasters are inevitable in an organization, but the effect of the disasters can be controlled by having backups of all the information used in the organization (Miller, Engemann & Yage, 2015). As such, the essence of the database backup is to create copies of the data and transaction logs used in the organization on a daily basis. The main role of the database backups is to ensure that a business restores to its original operations after a disaster. There is increasing demand for the use of information technology systems that generate data for use in the organization. However, the handling of the data determines its effectiveness in influencing the business decision-making process. The use of backups is a measure towards increasing the confidence to perform the routine tasks in the organization without worry of any eventuality (Little, 2003).
Database backups are a representation of the copy of data in the primary drives. Thus, when the original data is lost, the user can use the backup to retrieve the lost information. The copy has important parts of the database like the control file, archive logs, and the particular data files (Moore, 2005). Any media failure that occurs requires the use of the database backup to recover successfully the data. The importance of database backups cannot be underestimated. The impact of the damage to a database is significant when dealing with large databases. The loss or damage of a company production database, and express delivery service for banks and airlines results in loss of revenues (Flynn, 2007). Thus, it is required that the enterprise restores or recovers from the failure through the backups as soon as possible.
The backup strategy of the databases requires being in line with the needs of the business. The frequency and type of backups depend on the needs of the business. The failure of a database can inform of different ways. It can be through statement and process failure, user or application error, media failure, and instance failure. When a new database or application goes online, every aspect of its new and operates as designed. However, the working environment changes over time and the systems wear down. The system begins to fail in some areas that affect the availability, integrity, and usability of the database. Thus, database backups become crucial in such moments to restore the original functionality of the system (Moore, 2005).
Many hazards and risks are liable to affect the database. Thus, the plan of the database backup and recovery strategy should consider all the threats to the availability and integrity to the database (Moore, 2005). It is also essential to have precautions on the prevention of failure. The company requires considering all the potential risks to the continued availability of the database and having backups that address the issues.
Disaster Planning
Disasters are the occurrences that the organization has no control and have to occur. Thus, no organization can prevent a disaster from happening, but it’s possible to have an elaborate plan for the common disasters. Disaster planning entails all the activities performed before, during, and after a disaster as mitigation measures on how to address a disaster (TechRepublic, 2004). Thus, disaster planning is not a onetime event, but a progressive task. The change in nature and the rise of the types of disasters requires organizations to have a comprehensive plan for handling disasters.
