There is a lot of debate regarding the future of natural resources in regards to supplying the world’s energy need. One derivative of natural gas that has managed to stay under the radar, but is now gaining popularity, is butane.

One of the renowned chemist Edward Frankland discovered it in the year 1849. It is colourless and highly flammable gas; it burns rapidly when ignited with air. It is easily liquefied at relatively low pressure. Owing to these properties of butane, it has found numerous applications.

Here are some of the popular uses for butane gas.

Butane Torch

Since butane is highly flammable, it is used in the manufacturing of a tool called as Butane Torch in India. It is a tool which creates an intensely hot flame. Travel enthusiast and campers find this torch extremely convenient to be used in portable stoves and grills.

It is also used as kitchen appliance to melt cheese, caramelized sugar in cooking, melting toppings on casseroles, and to roast vegetables like peppers. Moreover, it also finds application in glass making, certain plumbing project that needs heat and in some craft projects.
Food Additives

Did you know that this gas is used in everyday life as Food Additives? When used as food additives, butane gas is usually found in the form of tert-Butylhydroquinone (TBHQ). TBHQ is known to prolong the shelf life of food. Moreover, potato chips, popcorns, butter, crackers and in some fast foods, you can find the use of butane in India. It is safe to consume as long as it is consumed in low level. Description
Butane is superior to propane and other fuel sources. It is inexpensive than its hydrocarbon peer, lights instantly, reaches its maximum heat output instantaneously.
LPG

Butane, when combined with propane and other substances forms liquefied petroleum gas, which is also known as LPG. It is found in the making of petrochemicals that are used in its purest form. Furthermore, it is used for calibrating instruments and also as a refrigerant. LPG is also commonly used for cooking and even as a vehicle fuel.
Refrigerators

The purest form of this gasis used as a refrigerant. As methane poses a risk to the ozone layer, it has been replaced with butane in a household refrigerator. Moreover, the addition of butane to gasoline enhances the performance and quality without increasing its flammability.
Lighters and Aerosols

Butane is commonly used as fuel in cigarette lighters as it can be easily pressurized. As the butane has a relatively low vapour pressure, it is convenient to place it in a small plastic pressure vessel such as lighter.

One of the distinctive characteristics of butane is that they can be compressed into a liquid at comparatively low pressure. When the pressure through the valve is released, it is instantaneously converted into a gas which is very easily ignited. Being a hydrocarbon, it does not affect the plastic.

Therefore, it is cheap and perfectly fulfills the properties needed for a small, safe lighter. Isobutane, in its highly purified form, is used as a propellant aerosol spray. Since it is cheap and readily available, it forms a popular component of aerosol.

Final Words

When you have the choice of butane as a fuel for your purpose, there is no need to rely on any other sources of energy. No doubt, its properties make it a popular fuel for different uses. For any doubt or query, you can also comment on the below box.
