As many as 5,100 seats would be added to the Indian Institutes of Technology, IITs. Under the present plan of the Ministry of Human Resource Development, a total of 3 lakh seats would be added in the higher education institutes across the country to provision for the 10% quota introduced for the economically weak within the general category. Apart from IITs, there would also be a massive increase of about 16,000 seats in Delhi University and about 800 seats across various Indian Institutes of Management or IIMs. Check list below.

At present, centrally funded institutions, which include IITs, NITs, IISc, IIMs and Central Universities, Central Open Universities, Government colleges, government aided colleges, etc. have about 9.3 lakh seats. Post the passing of the 10% quota provision, MHRD and the Prime Minister had confirmed that more seats would be introduced and not accommodated within the present matrix. While this implementation may take about a year, the total intake across these institutes is likely to increase by about 25%.
