Transitioning From Closed To Open Systems

Systems approach is a methodology or approach for addressing problems. The General systems theory (GST) has two types of systems which are the open and closed systems. The closed systems are isolated and detached from the environment while the open systems are those interacting with their immediate environments.
Systems theory has used w hen trying to solve complex problems. Systems theory is compatible and logical to our everyday experience. A system comprises of organized components of a structure of different or similar types. About the role of nurse leaders in solving problems, there is need to consider these components. Nurses in most cases have to consider the various facets of a problem. It also means considering information that may be out of their direct competence circle. Therefore, nurses have to use the systems theory in acquiring skills and information and drawing the right conclusion to a problem. Also, the systems do not exist in isolation. Thus, many components get to interact when a nurse is utilizing the system theory in coming with solutions to a problem (Norberg, & Cumming, 2008).
The U.S legislation has impacted on the health care industry in a profound way. The Affordable Care Act of 2010 is legislation that has made the nursing profession to go through a significant fundamental shift in changing patient’s experience. The health care system is also shifting its focus to specialty and acute care to a primary card which also means changes in business operations. Because of the increased number of the aging population, there is an overall shift in primary care and will be needed heavily shortly. The main challenge with closed systems is that determined by the experience of the customers (Norberg, & Cumming, 2008).
By use of an open system, there is a high chance of enhancing customer experience. The main characteristics of an open system are the ability to interact with the surrounding and environment. It is an aspect of great importance within the nursing contests because of the possibility of dramatically altering an environment (Lucia, 2009). Therefore, nurses should be able to reestablish and adjust themselves to an environment that is ever changing. The hospital has to address new issues such as timely emergency operations, timely services vandalism, terrorist threats, and theft. By use of open systems, nurse leaders can address these issues promptly by providing patients with the best services. Through constant and mutual exchange of information, it is possible to integrate seamlessly best practices throughout the organization. It is a vital benefit, unlike the closed system that does not aim at enhancing the amount of information exchange within the organization. It is also possible for a system to interface with other systems both of its kind and of the different type. An open system can be of great benefit to an organization’s stakeholders. It becomes possible to communicate in effective way aspects such as nursing characteristics company values and culture (Draper, LaDou, and Dan 2011).
The problem of a close systems perspective has the limitation of not preparing the health care practitioners for the future challenges. The IOM report indicates that job requirements for healthcare practitioner shortly will be more business oriented than it is now. Therefore, by use of an open system, the practitioners will gain the better understanding of their methods for quality managements as well as the overall management concepts in better aiding the medical facility. Thus, an open system facilitates the exchange of information leading to a positive improvement of customer experience.
