How Can You Try To Improve Your Mood Before Seeking Services From Mindset Therapy?
Our mood has a way of controlling what we do. When we are happy, we seek out things we enjoy, talk more to people, and start new adventures. When sad, we isolate from others, have a change in our eating and sleeping habits; and when angry we push people away and are short-tempered. Our mood is powerful. However, what would you think if I said it wasn’t your mood that was controlling what you do, but your thoughts?
When people seek out help from professionals it is often due to concern with their mood. They wish they were happier or less angry, for example. They might also seek treatment because they are unhappy with their behaviors such as eating more, sleeping less, yelling more, or crying more. However, a major contributor to how you feel and behave is your thoughts. In my experience as a psychologist, people rarely come to their first appointment saying they would like to change how they think to feel better; but this is exactly what needs to happen. Change how you think about a situation and you will change how you feel.
When trying to improve your mood prior to seeking the assistance of a therapist, such as a psychologist at Mindset Therapy, your first goal should be changing your mindset. According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a mindset is a “fixed state of mind”. The key word is “fixed”. When your approach to situations is fixed, you are not being flexible in your thoughts and will respond how you always have, or most recently have. This approach may work in most situations, however, when you are depressed, anxious, or angry, this approach may not be the best choice. Negative thoughts lead to negative moods and actions and this leads to a downward spiral of things getting worse. Your situation could even change for the better, but you are stuck in how you feel because of your fixed mindset which doesn’t allow for you to notice a changing situation for the better.
Changing how you think does not mean “positive thinking”. Positive thinking would include thoughts of “life is great” or “everyone likes me”. These are not realistic thoughts; thus, you will not believe them. As you work to change your mood by changing your thoughts, it is best to think of things that support the thought and those that do not. Once complete, review this information and develop a new thought that is realistic, such as “my brother and best friend are mad at me but I still have co-workers and parents that care about me”. Changing your mindset means changing how you think. You have changed your thought of “everyone hates me” to ““my brother and best friend are mad at me but I still have co-workers and parents that care about me”. Although you may still be sad or upset with your situation, your mood will improve and you can continue to make changes.
