Used for shaping or cutting or finishing metals or other materials the definition of a machine tool is a powered machine, if you look in the dictionary. To a wide variety of tools such as a drill, broach, hobbing machine, gear shaper, milling machine, lathe, grinder, and shaper this actually applies.

Of course the usefulness of these types of tools like the Drilling Machines is not described by this definition. So in this article we'll try to do just that.

Using a power source, most machine tools, are tools also by definition. They are not operated manually in other words. But considered machine tools that are operated by hand there are some tools.

For the purpose of making other tools the first, what were considered machine tools, were actually made. By hand these tools removed the human element from the process of stamping these tools. Instead by machines they were now stamped.

By Jacques de Vaucanson the first lathe machine tools were invented in 1751. On a mechanically adjustable head to mount the cutting instrument of the tool, he was the very first. This of the hands of the operator took the tool out.

By a number of sources Machine tools can actually be powered. Aside from human and animal power, in finally electricity today, and the early days the energy for these tools can be captured from steam engines and waterwheels. The Industrial Revolution on the progress made with machine tools, had a huge impact.

Machine tools can be manually or automatically controlled. To stabilize their motion the very early machine tools used flywheels. To control the machine they also had complex systems of levers and gears and it was working on whatever piece it was.

A new advanced machine called the numerical control machine like the Lathes was made After World War II. Controlling their motion, this machine used a series of numbers punched on punch cards or paper tape.

In the 1960s, to the function of making these machines work computers were then added. To the process these computers gave more flexibility. Over and over similar to an assembly line they could repeat the same set of instructions and these machines became known as computer numerical control machines.

These machines could produce pieces as compared to anything produced by even the most skilled tool operator that were much more complex.
Before these machines could automatically change the shaping and cutting tools that were being used in the process it wasn't long. To give an example, with a number of drill bits a drill machine might contain a cartridge or magazine. These bits for producing holes of different sizes could be used.

In order to drill a different size hole before it was automated operators would have to manually change the bit. Today, alternating the drill bits by computer program control we have the technology to create a machine.
The truth is, many of the things that we are able to make today would be either simply impossible to make, too costly or tool difficult without machine tools.
