Bordered by the Arctic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, and the Atlantic Ocean, Europe is a fascinating continent with a rich history and scenic natural surroundings. Some of the countries situated in this part of the world have a mix of Asian and European cultures, while others are characterised by a European way of life. On much of this continent, you can experience climatic conditions that are affected by warm Atlantic currents and chilly winters. There can be some seasonal differences on the coastal areas, especially those parts that are situated on the Mediterranean coasts.

Your cheap European holidays would give you the opportunity to explore some historic attractions that remind you of the rise of Western civilisation, which happened in countries like Greece. However, the history of human presence in this particular continent dates back 1.8 million years when Homo Erectus Georgicus lived in Georgia. Farming and raising of livestock increased during the European Neolithic period between 7000 and 1700 BCE. This was also the period when there was widespread use of pottery. Some of the advanced civilizations in Europe came into existence during the European Bronze Age, such as the Minoan and Mycenean civilizations.

One of the intriguing ancient structures of this period you can witness during your cheap European holidays is the Stonehenge, located in England. The Greeks and Phoenicians had colonised many places in the Iron Age, which resulted in the rise of several Mediterranean cities. Greece is the country where the Western democracy and rationalist culture was born. With the ideas of prominent philosophers, such as Aristotle, Plato, and Socrates, the country made significant contributions in humanism, philosophy, and rationalism. Rome also contributed greatly in the areas of architecture, law, politics, and engineering.

The European holidays would give you the chance to explore many of the architectural wonders that were constructed during the period when the Roman Empire ruled Western Europe and the entire Mediterranean basin. Constantine I legalised Christianity in the year 313 and moved the capital from Rome to Byzantium, which is the modern-day Istanbul. Pagan religions were outlawed by the Roman Emperor Theodosius between 391-392. The Western Roman Empire fell in the year 476 and the decline of the Romans caused Europe to enter an age of migrations and invasions, which is often referred to as the 'Dark Ages'. During the high and late Middle Ages, Europe experienced considerable growth in population and trade.

In the late Middle Ages, the Great Famine and a great epidemic of plage called 'Black Death' caused a considerable reduction in the population of France and about 25 million deaths in the entire European continent. The early modern period was a period of 'The Renaissance', which saw the development of art, music, philosophy, and the sciences. The 18th and 19th centuries witnessed the 'Age of Enlightenment'. Later, a series of wars were fought in the 20th century, including the two World Wars. After these wars, the European Community was formed, which became the European Union in the year 1993.
