Preparation For Septic Tank Cleaning
Septic systems are generally self-contained wastewater disposal mechanism that means your septic tank is connected with the city water supply and you have to take responsibility for cleaning your system. If we neglect the septic tank, it would be clogged by scum and sludge which cannot be broken down by bacteria thereby leading to collapse of the tank. Due to this reason, you must inspect, pump, and clean your tank at regular intervals. Some of the steps for septic cleaning in Houston are provided below.
Cleaning up the Baffle Filter
• During your annual inspection, pull the tank cover and find the pipes leading water out of the tank and waste into the tank.
The baffle filters are located here holding sludge and scum in place. Many of the older tanks do not have filters installed. Wear protective rubber gloves, by using a hoe, rake, or your hands, reach into the outlet baffle and pull the filter.
• Now hold the filter over the inlet side of the septic system and dip it in a bucket of water or spray the filter using a hose. After rinsing is complete, pour any leftover waste in the tank. Check for cracks or solids clogging the filter. When the filter is not cleaned at regular intervals, wastes filled up and stopped working properly. If the filter is damaged or you cannot clean, it would be best to replace with a new one.
• When installing a new filter or putting back the old one, check the sides of the filter. There may have an arrow on the filter. If the filter were properly installed, the arrow would be pointed in the downward direction to the drainage system. After the filter is fitted in the baffle, put the tank’s lid and screw it tightly.
Pumping the Septic Tank
• Majority of the people think that there is no requirement for septic tank treatment as the plumbing appears to be functional. For septic tank cleaning in Houston, one can save hundreds of dollars in repairs, if the tank is properly maintained before it is clogged with sludge and the liquid stops draining. This must be done every one to two years or whenever the scum and sludge levels are approaching the outlet pipe or occupy one-third of the tank.
• If the tank is small or the system is used by many people, you need to clean the tank frequently for smooth operations. A two bedded house with two members having a 750-gallon tank would last for four years without pumping, and for four people, it would last maximum two years without pumping. If the treatment is done annually, the tank would be clean, problems could be detected beforehand, and one can save hundreds of dollars.
• After the scum and the sled are removed, one does not need to reintroduce water or bacteria. After pumping out the tank, dispose the waste away from water in a government-chosen area.
