Older Nissan Navara And Four Other Models Receive Takata Airbag Recall
Total Articles: 35
The Takata recall scandal continues to unfold with dozens of car manufacturers and millions of car owners affected by defective airbag issues. Now Nissan has issued a recall of their older Navara, Patrol, Maxima, Pulsar and X-Trail models too. The new Nissan Navara and other models are unaffected by these problems, but always check to make sure. Let’s take a closer look at what we’ve learned about this Nissan recall to date.
Nissan Australia Commence a Recall
Nissan Australia has begun to recall a variety of older generation cars that have been fitted with the now infamous Takata airbag inflator units. This is for cars fitted with a like for like replacement and a total of 87,503 vehicles in total are affected. The problem has occurred across five different Nissan model lines that were built between 2001 and 2008 exclusively. So, as an example: the Nissan Navara 2018 models would not be affected by this recall at all.
The Scale of the Problem
The older generation Nissan Navara, Patrol, Maxima, Pulsar, and X-Trail are all affected. These vehicles have all been fitted with passenger side airbags that are faulty that have a beta rating. These airbags were already replaced in an earlier recall, and this latest recall will deal with non Takata fitted parts. The primary cause of concern (like other Takata recalls) is the airbag inflator propellant. There is strong evidence that this propellant will degrade significantly over time and become less effective. This is a particular risk in environments where the car is exposed to high levels of humidity and higher temperatures for an extended period of time.
The Potential Risks
If the airbag propellant has degraded in an affected Nissan car, there could be dire consequences for the occupants. In the event of a collision the airbag should trigger, but on a vehicle with these issues, this may be the last thing that you need. The faulty airbag inflator would actually rupture through the metal inflator housing and then shoot metal fragments into the car's cabin. This fragments would be travelling at speed, and they represent a serious risk of injury. In extreme circumstances, this could even cause a fatality if an artery is pierced. Needless to say, people are incredibly concerned, and the VIN list for affected vehicles has been made public.
What Happens Next?
Nissan Australia will be contacting any owners of these affected cars soon. If you have an affected car, you can contact Nissan Australia directly or respond to the phone call, letter, SMS or email as necessary. The replacement airbag will be fitted free of charge, and if you have any further questions, your local Nissan car dealership will be happy to help. This will be an ongoing process for some time to come, but Nissan is committed to making their cars as safe as possible for their customers.
If they are looking for Nissan Navara Perth based motorists should contact Perth City Nissan to arrange a no obligation test drive.
