Fundamentals Of Meter Proving And Its Importance
Flow meters need to be recalibrated periodically to correct the inaccuracies caused by the change in the product, process and environmental characteristics. Meter proving is done by comparing a meter’s actual registered throughput to a known reference volume or mass. The ratio of known volume (mass) to recorded volume is a dimensionless number called “meter factor.”
For volume proving, the meter and prover volumes are subjected to a series of calculations using correction factors to convert volumes to standard conditions for the effects of temperature and pressure to establish a meter factor.
To ensure that a meter reading is accurate, it is crucial to periodically carry out the meter proving skid tests in which its readings are compared with measurements obtained from proving equipment that is as per the industrial standards.
The proving method in meter prover skid involves determining the volume or mass of product measured by a reference device and comparing this measurement with that indicated by the reading of the meter under test. The meter display is then modified utilizing a calibration device to register the same quantity as measured by the reference meter.
Many corrections may have to be applied to the readings of the reference device to compensate for variations in operating conditions from the ones under which it was calibrated, e.g. temperature, pressure, flow rate, flow profile, viscosity etc.
The need for Meter Prover Skid
A meter in service should be regularly proved to verify its accuracy. The earlier determined meter factor may no longer be applicable because of changes in fluid properties, operating circumstances, and physical wear & tear of the meter. Particular reasons for meter proving include the following:
a) To reduce the financial impact of possible undetected accuracy variations.
b) In most cases, contractual requirements are present for the same, such as scheduled meter maintenance based on throughput and elapsed time.
c) The components of the meter have been altered, modified, repaired, extracted, or reprogrammed;
d) Variations in operating conditions have occurred, such as fluid type, density, viscosity, temperature, pressure, or flow rate.
Meter proving can be accomplished using different types of proving devices, including tank provers, master meter provers, small volume provers and pipe provers.
