When the winter blues set in mid-year there is nothing quite like an escape to the north. With its warm dry weather, stunning landscapes and wonderful wildlife, the Kimberley region has so much to offer visitors at this time of year. Here are some highlights not to miss:

Windjana Gorge

Windjana Gorge is one of the Kimberley’s most beautiful gorges, well known for its surrounding cliffs and tranquil freshwater pools. There is a rich history to this location, in 1894 the Aboriginal leader, Jandamarra (also known as Pigeon) hid from the local authorities here. He was eventually shot at Pigeon Rock during a fierce gun battle, the rock now named after him. The gorge is also a spiritual place to the Bunuba people, who believe that power creation spirits called “Wandjina” reside here.

Tunnel Creek

Jandamarra spent time also hiding out in Tunnel Creek. When visiting this special spot, visitors can walk into the dark 750 meter tunnel, which has been cut through the rock by the creek over many thousands of years. The tunnel now stands approximately 15 meters wide and 12 meters high, and can be accessed when visiting the site. Rocks and water still run through the tunnel making walking shoes, stap on sandals or old sneakers the best options for those wishing to head into the darkness.

Bungle Bungles Range

Located within the Purnululu National Park the Bungle Bungles are unique beehive orange and dark grey banded towers formed by sandstone and conglomerates. The traditional owners of this area are the Jaru and Gidja people, and Indigenous people have inhabited the area for an estimated 20,000 years or more. The range was later discovered by a film crew in the mid-1980s, and soon became a well-known tourist destination. You can explore this beautiful region on foot, via vehicle or even the air on board a scenic helicopter or small aeroplane.

Lake Argyle

The biggest man made the lake in the southern hemisphere, this monstrosity is home to more than 70 islands, abundant marine life and plenty of tourists. It is classified as an inland sea, and can hold 10.7 billion cubic meters of water when full. Around 75 kilometers from Kununurra the lake has plenty of activities for visitors. Enjoy a BBQ on the banks of the river, take a river cruise or take one of the nearby walking trails. Keep an eye out for freshwater crocodiles, fish, wallabies and bird life – the region is home to over 240 species of birds!
