Ordering A Custom Motor Boat Requires A Lot Of Consideration

Custom motor boat design begins with an idea. That idea is in the head of the potential owner who has an idea for a motor boat that would suit his needs, or perhaps more accurately, his requirements. For instance, he might require eight TV sets in a 50ft motor boat, but does anyone really NEED eight TV sets? There is a difference between needs and wants, but of course if he wants eight TV sets then his requirement can be accommodated, albeit that it might mean sacrificing something somewhere else.

The owner really needs to sit down and think about all of the possibilities for his boat. Provided he has the money, within reason a custom boat can be built that will satisfy his desires, but he first has to know what those desires are. Does he want a motor boat that can flit across the English Channel, or down the coast to the Mediterranean, or does he want one in which he can sail around Cape Horn? There will be a very big difference in the design of those two boats.

While the owner may know where he wants to travel, there are many other things to consider, several of them minor, but nonetheless important for the finished product. For instance, what about the material used for the chairs and settees on a large boat? Does he want a traditional design, or would he prefer something very modern or even futuristic? Any owner thinking about ordering a new boat should really spend some considerable time making lists of all his requirements, even down to the little things like the type of cutlery and cooking equipment that he wants on board. Only then can he go to a boat designer and place his order.

Of course, it may be that when requesting a custom motor boat design, the designer he chooses will have some better ideas based on his own practical experience over the years and may attempt to persuade the owner to change some of his ideas. It could be that they are impractical for the size of boat that he wants, or simply that there are better ways of doing things. Ultimately, the choice of cooking equipment or cutlery is not going to be too much of a problem or make an awful lot of difference to the boat, but the hull design and engine requirements most certainly are.

This is where the owner and the designer really do need to sit down and have several meetings in order to thrash out something that can prove to be a viable proposition, and it may require some give and take on both sides. Provided he has chosen a reputable yacht designer, the owner would do well to listen to the ideas and advice of the designer rather than stubbornly insist on a particular path, because in that way the finished boat is likely to prove a far more practical proposition to run and operate.

That is not to say that the designer will always be right, but with years of design experience and successful launches behind him, the likelihood is that in most instances where there may be disagreement the designer will know best.

Choosing a designer is another matter for the owner. Some designers may only have worked with a certain type of boat such as small racing yachts. In this case, that particular designer may not be the best choice for someone wanting a round-the-world motor superyacht. This is another reason why the potential owner needs to sit down and think carefully about his ideas and carry out due diligence when looking for a motor boat designer and the right boatyard.

For instance, Nautor's Swan has a great record with sailing yachts, having built over 2,000 of them in the last 50 years or so, but to our knowledge has never built a motor yacht. On the other hand, Baltic Yachts has built many motor yachts so would be a far better choice to build a custom motor boat. The old expression "horses for courses" springs to mind.

The more information about his plans and ideas the owner can give to the designer, the better the finished project will turn out to be.

Frers Design of Milan is operated by German Mani Frers who is the third generation his family to be a yacht designer. Mani has created custom motor boat designs for all types of sailing yachts and many motor yachts including the Frers MY155 trimaran superyacht currently in build at McConaghy Boats in China.
