If you're interested in the type of smartphone you use, and you do not have an iPhone or a high-end Samsung or LG offering, chances are you're using an HTC. HTC is one of the four major smartphone makers that have been praised in recent years for offering near-perfect phones for Android lovers. This has resulted in numerous awards, but they are not really related to the sales that the Taiwanese company in the UK may deserve.

It follows on the widely praised HTC One (M8), which was praised for its association of form with function but chastised for its average camera. Can the M9 honor the promise of the M8 if it wants to continue gaining ground in the highly competitive phone market?

Design and Screen:

First, the M9 is a good looking phone. The all-metal unibody design makes it look like a top-of-the-line device, while the plastic back of the Samsung Galaxy S5 has been mocked all around to enhance what was otherwise a great device. The model I tested was a combination of pink gold and silver. A gold / pink combination and gunmetal and amber gold are also available. I was not particularly fond of the color combination, but I understand that HTC's means of visually differentiating the M9 from other high-end phones in the market.

The 5-inch 1080p screen is crisp and pleasant to watch TV shows and movies, even though it's a bit dark for my eyes. Despite the weight of 15g less than the iPhone 6 Plus (my normal phone), the polished aluminum body of the M9 felt stronger in the hand. It seemed a lot bulkier and more cumbersome to make longer phone calls, but I note that this is largely a matter of preference. The on / off switch has been moved from the top of the case to the right side just below the volume keys, which is slightly irritating with identical size and almost identical finish.

Battery life, Reception and Performance:

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 processor ran several apps easily, and the 2840 mAh battery lasted a full day even after moderate to heavy use. While this is more than good for the average user and better than many other phones at the moment, it is not a big step forward for the M8 either. At times, I noticed that the metal body became warm after extensive use, but not so much that it became a problem. I also found no special reception problems in and around London.

The M9 is equipped with 32 GB of internal memory and 3 GB of RAM and can support a further 128 GB via Micro SD. This feature is not available to M8 owners. The BoomSound speakers are really impressive by now. Partnering with Dolby Audio was a smart move for HTC, as the M9 avoids the "Tinny" label, which continues to track so many smartphones and deliver the best sound possible without additional speakers. The phone also comes with specially designed earphones that will fit well and sound great.

Software and functions:

The M9 is the first HTC mobile phone to ship with the new Sense 7.0 user interface on Android 5.0 Lollipop. Sense 7 is designed to put the user at the heart of using the M9, so you can create your own custom themes from your own photos, resulting in new apps, backgrounds, and color schemes. Of course, how much you use this feature depends on how much you want to customize your interface. As an iOS user, this list is not very high on my priority list. But there are undoubtedly many who would like to use the widget.

Organizing Images Cloudex records all your photos from Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, etc., and merges them into an easy-to-navigate internal gallery. This is a clever solution to the world's first problem when trying to find the photo you want. Apart from these functions, the M9 hardly differs from the M8.

The camera is where the M9 falter because the rear-facing 20.7MP lens is frankly not as good as it should be. Shots taken in low light are slightly blurry and the flash is average at best. According to HTC, the 4 UltraPixel cameras on the front provide 300 percent more light than conventional cameras. This leads to sharper and better defined selfies. I was more impressed by the pictures taken with this camera than from the back, as they were detailed and in focus.
