Last month, Google has surprised everyone with the final beta version of Android P, i.e. Android 9.0 Pie. With this latest version of Android, a wide range of enhancement can be seen in the Android application development.

This feature will learn the apps you use over time and prioritize system resources to them. Like, if there are some apps that you rarely use then Android Pie will ignore them until you actually open them. By this feature, you get the most out of your battery and make it last for a longer time.
Apart from that, Android 9.0 now sports a new mechanism called ‘Adaptive Brightness’ that learns your preferred levels of brightness in different surroundings. By tracking user-adjusted brightness, it will automatically put the screen brightness levels for you.

Display Cutouts

Display cutout is actually a feature with the help of which ‘notches’ are made in the display areas of the Android mobile device. The new feature include different types of cut out modes similar to narrow, tall, and wide to suffice different notch dimensions.

App Slices

Another AI-based feature is Slices which allows an app’s functionality to pop up on the Google app when searched for. For example- If you searched for Uber, you will quickly be able to request a cab to your location.

App Actions

The smartest feature in the latest version is App Actions, which keeps an eye on your actions and predicts actions you are likely to take next.

Indoor navigation with Wi-Fi RTT

This new feature facilitates indoor GPS style tracking by determining your position within a building and facilitating turn-by-turn directions to help you navigate indoors.

Smart replies to notifications

Now, you will now be able to reply to a message from the notification or enter any other text.


Another feature is ‘Dashboard’ which breaks downs phone usage data to show how you spend time on your device.

Wind Down Mode

You only need to tell Google Assistant when you want to go to bed, and when that time draws near it will turn on Do Not Disturb and switch the screen to wind down mode.

BiometricPrompt API

This feature allows a system-managed dialog to prompt the user for any supported type of biometric authentication.

Multiple Camera API Support

Android P also has come up with an enhanced API, which allows the user to call a local camera stream that has the ability to switch in between the multiple cameras.
Gesture Navigation

Android 9 Pie introduces the gesture navigation system inspired by Apple’s iPhone X. Instead of a three-button layout at the bottom, there is a basic Overview mode is available which can be triggered by swiping up from the bottom of the screen.

In addition to the big changes found in Android Pie, there are tons of smaller elements also scattered throughout the update. Some of them include Zoom Pop-up, Do-not-disturb, built-in screenshot editors and ART improvements. Also, you will love to know that Google’s added a ton of new emojis in this latest version to keep your conversations bright and colorful.

Who can install this update?

If you are curious about trying out a slice, you will need to make sure you have the right Smartphone. Right now, Android P beta version is only available only on a few smartphones which include Pixel 2 / Pixel 2 XL, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, Sony Xperia XZ2, Sony Xperia XZ2 Premium, Vivo X21, Pixel / Pixel XL, Oppo R15 Pro, Essential Phone, Nokia 7 Plus and OnePlus 6.

Google also announced that it is working with a number of other partners to launch or upgrade devices to Android 9 this year.
