Leadership Definition

Leadership is the capability of an individual to inspire admiration and trust of the individuals they lead and make it possible for these people to follow them about the attainment of the set goals. Leaders gain the trust of their followers by acting as the example to be followed by the team members. Leadership is about setting a direction that members of the team are going to follow, building an inspiring vision as well as creating something new and encouraging the team members to participate in the realization (Vaux & Gamble, 2014). Leaders map out where an organization needs to attain its goals and ensure that there is the developing of an attitude that encourages teamwork. The main components that make up leadership include the creation of an inspiring future vision, inspiring and motivating people to participate in the vision, managing the delivery of the established vision. Additionally, the leadership attribute encompasses the coaching as well as the building of a team that will effectively enhance the realization of the vision (Vaux & Gamble, 2014).
Personal Skills and Weaknesses
As a leader, I possess various strengths that have made it possible for me to attain the success that my department has been able to accomplish. Confidence is one of the main leadership strengths I rely upon in the execution of my duties as the head of the department. The confidence makes it possible for me to take and make decisions that are not very popular among the members of my team. The idea of the reason the confidence that exudes is the belief that by chasing the paths that appear to be risky, the members of my team are also going to be more confident also and thus raise their persistence. At the same time, I ensure that I take responsibility for any decisions that appear to be going wrong and take effective countermeasures that will ensure the team is back on track.
Effective communication as the additional strength helps me to rely on the decisions and expectations of a project to all the stakeholders. The foundation of any undertaking is in ensuring that the members of a project execution team receive all the details, requirements as well as timelines effectively. Through this attribute, the all the issues that could adversely affect the execution of a projected are sorted and, as a result, enhancing the attainment of the set objectives.
Honesty is also another strength I possess where I ensure that I treat the members of my team in a fair and considerate manner. In this case, I ensure that they are aware of all the project issues that affect them directly and as a result, I have been able to earn the trust of all the teams I work with on any project. Decisiveness as a strength makes it possible to make the tough decisions that are unpopular but could impact a project in a major way. It is always my duty to comprehend the diverse situations that face a project, and although some are difficult, I ensure that I make the decision having the best interests of organizations. In most cases most of the members of my team do not like the decisions and in all cases, it ensures that I do not hesitate in making them.
The main weakness that I have been the fact those occasions I am overly courageous and take some risky decisions that end up bringing problems to the project. The challenge, in this case, is that there is time wasted as we try to deal with the challenges at and accomplish the project within the set time.

Leadership Experience
19 months ago I acted as a project manager as SmithSones geothermal power Generation Company was constructing a dam in Canada with the objective of enhancing the power generation capacities and thus bigger market share. The areas set for the construction of the dam was proving to be a challenge as there was to be the diversion of a huge volume of water yet people used the same water for irrigation. Additionally, the swampy nature of the location was also a challenge as special drilling, and construction materials were to be used. Implementation of the project was to be in consultation with other engineers to complete it within the set 18 months.
Through the teamwork exhibited by the construction of the dam, we were able to option the completion of the dam, causing minimal challenges to the farmers download in accessing the irrigation water and within the set budget. The main attribute that make it possible to complete the project within the set timelines and budget is the fact that I emphasized on effective communication and decisiveness on the various decisions that could affect the project adversely.
Leadership skills employed
The fact that I was the project leader made it imperative that I design and adopt various leadership skills that would guarantee the success of the project. The initial task I undertook before the commencement of the project was the undertaking of the assessment of the various risks that were imminent to the project ensuring the rewards were superior. The project required the participation of all the members, implying that it was imperative that they were all aware of the expectations. Thus effective communication was the additional attribute I relied upon in ensuring that all the members of the team met the expectations and the same time attained the required quality (Fromm & Trilling, 2013).
I also employed delegation heavily as it was necessary to ensure that all the members of the team were adequately exposed to the project. Through the delegation, the members of the project team developed confidence in their abilities and, as a result, required less supervision. Thus, the attribute made it possible for me to use the time I would have been supervising them in dealing with other project issues thus promoting the realization of the project’s stipulated demands. Exuding trustworthiness from all members of the project through showing genuine care for their plight as well as empathizing with them made it possible for them to trust my directions (Vaux & Gamble, 2014).The outcome was cooperation that ensured everyone was dedicated to the completion of the project within the set timeline as well as budget.
Summary
The implementation of any project and within the set timelines relies heavily on the leadership skills that the project managers normally exhibit and the cooperation from the team members. Teamwork is only possible if everyone feels that their contribution is valued and that they are not just being exploited. By ensuring that the project leader has knowledge of the leadership skills, he is going to be in a position to nurture all members of his team and, as a result, attain cooperation and dedication that is instrumental in the success of any project.
