Rfid - Research Paper (automotive Industry)
The automotive industry gets composed of different operations ranging from the fleet control, the public transportation of people and goods as well as the manufacturing of vehicles and vehicle parts. The modern automotive industry requires taking applying the current criteria in the improving the operations within the industry. The automotive industry has developed communication and the network technology to facilitate the automation of the industrial operations and activities. The automotive industry has included the operations involving the vehicle monitoring, road transportation of the dangerous goods, the logistics and the armored cars. The automotive industry has tried to incorporate the above departments in an attempt to control and manage the operations behind the customer demand and specifications. However, the right technology and the application of the required automation make a major challenge to the automotive industry.
The Automotive Industry Problem Definition
The automotive industry has challenges in the implementation of the elaborate searching and monitoring of the vehicles. The fleet management process gets compromised with several security issues ranging from the hijacking of the vehicles, stealing of the vehicles and the commodities on transit as well as having vehicle accessories removed. The rampant risks within the automotive industry involved the taking of the vehicle parts and fuel while on transit. Several cases involving the stolen vehicles that never get has increased the criminal records within the last three years. The shortcoming of the industries got cited as the lack of having proper monitoring equipment within the industry (Standardization will power RFID, 2007). The previous technology applied in the monitoring of the vehicles proves inaccurate. The analysis of the previous systems proved that the initial system of monitoring had limitations in accessing the data and information in the environments having tall structures and through the tunnels. The previous technology could not provide the information regarding the true position of the particular vehicle within the sharp corners and the steep bending. The automotive industry also faced problem in determining the real time information of the vehicle on transit. The technology applied could not locate the vehicle while moving at the moderate speed of above 20 kilometers per hour (Barclay, 2010). The industry requires the implementation of the monitoring equipment to facilitate management of the vehicles on transit. The main attributes of the system required to solve the vehicle monitoring issues involve the integration of the RFID technology with the Global Positioning system (GPS) technology. The RFID technology shall have the interface that facilitates the implementation locating the actual position of the vehicles depending on the actual position. The RFID system shall get incorporation of the LANDMARK technology that facilitates the accurate identification of the vehicle position. The LNDMARC technology shall solve the problem associated with the allocation of the actual position of the vehicle. The LANDMARK technology provides the exact location of the vehicle despite the fact that the vehicle may travel in a tunnel or on the streets surrounded by tall structures (Fescioglu-Unver, et al… 2015). The LANDMARK provides the effective and efficient determination of the location of the vehicle as well as providing the real-time monitoring of the high speeding vehicle. The system analyzes the software and the hardware components of the vehicles and provides the status of the vehicle without having geographical constraints.
An overview of the chosen RFID system including
The RFID technology has a simple architectural design that implements the basic RFID devices like the transponders or the tags and the Readers. The transponders or the RFID tags get embedded in the materials or the equipment requiring monitoring or tracking. The readers get installed at the respective positioning at the monitoring and the controlling station. The RFID tags contain built-in antennae that have the special design to enhance the transmission of radio frequency waves across the mediums to the RFID reader devices. The RFID reader recognizes the information from the transponders and decodes the information for transmission to the storage devices. The process of the transmissions involves the initial steps of exchanging data and information to facilitate communication between the devices. The RFID tags send signals to the nearby readers. The RFID readers respond via sending the feedback signals back to the RFID tag. The information exchanged includes the data and information for the identification. Through the exchange of identification data and information, the communication session gets established, and the signals get transmitted to and from the RFID devices.
Benefits of the RFID system
The RFID technology provides large storage capacity. The RFID technology implements the virtual storage techniques that promote the large repository of data and d information. The real tone data and information get stored and refreshed every time and the moment the data and information changes. The RFID memory allows reversing of events such that the original data and information can get tracked at through auto recovery (Standardization will power RFID, 2007). The RFID technology enables the reading and recording of the real-time data and information required in monitoring and tracking of the vehicles. The entire activities involving the transportation process within the automotive get controlled at the real time events. The tracks and the fleet of the public transportation may get direct monitoring and track along the routes of the transportation (Barratt, & Choi, 2007). The automotive industry using the RFID technology has the capability of using the RFID to prevent vandalism of the vehicle by the employees as well as thieves. The movements and activities of the vehicles get recorded providing a high level of the employee, consumer and customer reliability.
Benefits and disadvantages of the RFID system
The RFID technology has a lot of issues regarding the usability of the system. Individuals implementing the system may misuse the purpose of the system thus engaging in threatening of the personal privacy and confidentiality. The tracking of people without their consent is against the information and technology policies. The installation of the RFID monitoring and devices and the RFID readers is against the law and has implication for bleaching individuals rights and freedom to privacy and confidentiality (Jing, et al… 2014).
Security Concerns or Practices Associated With The RFID System
Following the installation of the RFID system the verification and the validation of the new system get implemented. The system checking and testing is applies to ensure that the entire system comply with the standards and the IT policies specified by the ISO. The system architecture requires complying with the software and hardware components for the applications of the RFID to guarantee software and hardware compliance as well as the hardware and software compatibility (Barratt, & Choi, 2007).
Impact of Implementation of the RFID Technology
The management team within the monitoring and accessing department must ensure that the operations involving the monitoring and tracking of the vehicles get well communication among the users of the system, the customers and the transporting team. The creation of the awareness eliminates the problems associated with the bleaching of individual’s rights and freedom to the privacy and confidentiality. The Automotive industry should formulate rules and regulations that ensure that the general IT policies on the security get well implemented by the employees of the organization. The organization must have the standards and get the RFID policy compliance according to the ISO directives. The organization must sign the letter of acknowledgement to the public on the issues concerning the use of monitoring and tracking system. The company must take the responsibility, accountability and provide transparency of the data and information gathered by their system. The users of the system within the automotive industry should get training on the policies as well as the rules and regulations governing the system and the operations. The training should focus at creating awareness to the employees on the importance of applying best practices when monitoring and tracking vehicles (Cao, et al… 2009). Similarly the employees should get equipped with the knowledge about the rights and freedom to the personal data and information. The privacy and the confidentiality policies must be taught to the employees to avoid bleaching of the individual rights.
The process of the identification and implementation of the RFID technology provide solution to the issues concerning the tracking and monitoring of the vehicles in the automotive industry. The implementation of the strategies like the LANDMARC provides the precise and effective way of locating and monitoring the vehicles at real time. The RFID and the integration of the LANDMARC technology provide the reliable and highly flexible system in the provision of the security to the fleet management and the public transportation of goods and people. The RFID technology supports the World Wide Web applications that enable the individuals to search and track their vehicles through the application of the World Wide Web. The RFID technology provides high level of scalability and modularity thus making the automobile industry easy adapt to the new advancements in the technology. The RFID system guarantees compatibility of the systems with the future technologies thus providing the automotive industry with the ability to expand and apply the new technology with ease.
