The place you choose to meditate really matters. You can see a shrine or an altar that you can face when you sit in meditation. You might put a candle on your altar and objects which mean a lot to you.
Try and keep eyes open. Open eyes make you more present. Slightly lower your eyes and soften your gaze. If you close your eyes you might get drifted to thoughts and stories. But, do what you are comfortable with.
In consciousness, we are seldom ever present. Meditation is a wonderful way to wake up your life. To focus means to pay soft attention to whatever you put in the center of awareness
You have to pay attention to your breath; you will find the best way to anchor yourself in the present moment.
When thoughts come to you, gently let them go away and return to focus on your breath. Don’t try to stop your thoughts; this will agitate you. Imagine that they are unwelcome visitors at your threshold: acknowledge their presence and ask them to leave, politely.
You can’t focus well if you allow strong emotions coming in. The best way to deal with strong emotions in meditation is to focus on the body feels that accompany the emotion.
Silence is the best way to heal. There some meditation music, but it is preferable to be away from any sort of sound. When we are in silence we get to experience what our mind is exactly doing. Sitting in silence makes you steady and calm.
Begin with 10 minutes and sit longer, only if you feel the length is too short. Don’t pressurize yourself to meditate longer if you are not ready to do that. Gradually you might try to extend your meditation to about 25 minutes. That’s a length which permits you to settle your mind without causing much stress on your body.
