The Working Principle Of A Low Temperature Heat Pump

The Arctic series low temperature heat pump systems are capable of operating continuously in weather as low as -15 F (- 25 C). The heat pumps can heat your home, can cool your home or pool during the summer while providing heat for domestic hot water or hot tubs and pools.

Cold air contains energy.

Arctic low temperature heat pump systems are specifically designed to work in temperature below the freezing point as low as -25 C (-15 F). A few people realize that the air below freezing point has nearly the same amount of relative energy as it does above freezing.

Cold air contains energy. Only in space where the temperature is absolute zero (-273C) is no energy left in the air.

Warm air always moves to cold.

This is the main principle used in a heat pump. Warm air contains more energy and more molecules collision than the cold air. Naturally, warm air will migrate to cold air until an equilibrium condition is achieved.

This is why Arctic series low temperature heat pump uses a colder liquid – Freon which does freeze until the temperature reaches to – 50. They can easily make the warmer – 25 C temperature air to transfer its energy to the colder Freon which is present inside the heat pump.

Pressure helps you know the boiling point.

Boiling points vary from a substance to another; and can be changed by removing or adding certain amount of pressure. After all, water boils at 100C at 14.69 Psi. If you reduce the pressure, it boils faster than usual.

On Mount Everest, the pressure is only 4.89 Psi - which makes the water to boil at 71 C. This is because of its less pressure. The Arctic series low temperature heat pump uses Freon for its refrigeration cycle which transitions from a liquid to its gaseous state at a much lower temperature as compared to water.

If you adjust the pressure of Freon, you can manipulate when this phase change happens. Usually, the cold climate heat pump for hot water uses a refrigerant known as R410a that is appropriate for energy store in colder conditions. The temperature inside the refrigerant can be made to boil – 50 C by reducing the pressure inside the heat pump.

The cold – 50 Freon passes through a heat exchanger. The – 25 C warmer outside energy moves to the colder Freon, around the heat exchanger. This makes the Freon to absorb a certain amount of energy.

When it heats up, the Freon starts evaporating and goes to its gaseous state. The Freon gas is then brought to compressor for its compressions, making it to increase temperature greatly while decreasing its volume.

Then the hot gas is transferred over another heat exchanger in which the other side is glycol or colder water. The energy transitions from hot to cold and heats a glycol or water loop inside the home. The refrigerant loses it heat which again goes back to the liquid state to start the refrigeration cycle.

Final consideration –

This is the basic principle of the refrigeration cycle. If you understand these principles, then you can understand how a low temperature heat pump works even in – 15 F or – 25 C. In short and simple words, a heat pump is a way of transferring energy one source to another.
