How Do You Know When Your Nissan Pathfinder Needs New Tyres?

How Tyre Tread Works

We need to take great care of our tyres because our lives literally depend on them when we are driving. Sadly, some drivers neglect their tyres, and this can lead to dangerous situations. The tyre relies on a good tread to ensure that you stay safe when driving in many different conditions.

On a perfectly dry road, the tyre tread is actually a hindrance; it will reduce the car's performance and reduce the contact patch. The forces that could be transmitted via the contact patch are significantly reduced. However, on a wet road the tread becomes more important, its purpose is to disperse the water away from the contact patch and thus help the tyre to grip onto the road surface. If the tyre ever loses its tread, it will be unable to grip to a wetter road surface, accelerating, cornering, and braking, become virtually impossible.

The Contact Patch

So, we’ve referred to the contact patch a couple of times now, and it’s important to understand what this term means. Essentially, the contact patch is the tyre area that is in contact with the road at any given time. This is a small area, and when the car is in motion, it’s obviously changing constantly as the wheel rotates. The actual contact patch is an area that’s approximately the size of your palm. Through this area (on each tyre at once) the steering, accelerating, cornering, and braking are all transmitted from the driver to the road surface.

Identifying Worn Tyres

There are tyre tread indicator bars that are moulded into the tread grooves on modern car tyres. They are spaced at regular intervals around the entire tyre, and they are used to indicate when the tyre tread has been worn to the limit for safety. In Australia, the minimum tread depth is 1.5mm across the entire tread width and if the tread is worn further the car is not road legal. This is easy to notice; if the tyre is worn the indicator bars are flush with the tread surface. Certain car manufacturers will recommend that the tyres are replaced prior to reaching that point to maintain safety. If you’re in any doubt, consult your owner’s manual for more detailed information. The best way to maintain your tyres is to keep them at the correct pressure.
