As mentioned in the latest research note from Tianfeng International Securities’ analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple will evade the current Liquid Crystal Polymer antenna technology, and shift towards a new combination of Modified Pi technology.

According to Kuo, there are many reasons for Apple for making this change. For some, the company claimed to have “lesser bargaining power” against LCP material supplies, at the same time it is not too difficult to bring additional LCP supplies due to the “complex production process.”

Moreover, Kuo mentions that LCP is more “brittle” than its any alternatives. It has issues with yield rate, thus, improving that yield rate has possibilities to lower the antenna’s performance. As for the Modified Pi antenna’s performance, Kuo said that “performance can be as good as LCP” then said thanks to the developed fluoride formula.

Also, Kua says something about his prediction about the new combination of antenna technology; the 2019 iPhones are going to adopt four MPI antennae and two more LCP antennae. Presently, in the iPhones X series, all devices are equipped with LCP antenna.

2019’s iPhones will have five supplies for MPI, said Kuo. This apparently provides Apple the improved bargaining power, with the supplies having to compete on determined price. The LCP antennae technology, which will be used in 2019’s iPhones, is going to be supplied exclusively by the Japanese supplies. For that, Kuo thanked its superior vertical integration.

For most of the average consumers, this change doesn’t look as if it will come handy with any extraordinary changes. According to 9to5mac, Kuo reveals that both LCP and MPI are more likely to be involved in the push towards 5G tech. Although LCP has conventionally offered advantages in some areas like low loss and consistent performance, MPI is widely believed to succeed in reaching the high level.
Earlier this month, it was also predicted by Kuo that upgraded Face ID with some exciting features is coming to the new iPhones in 2019, whereas he also noted that new iPads are being expected to arrive by early 2020.
