If you are working in an industry where you may need to deal with electric arc flash and flash fire, it is important that you wear FR clothing while operating in such environments. OSHA has now made it compulsory for anyone working with fire or operating in the oil and gas sector to wear FR clothing for optimum protection against fire. The good thing is that numerous companies now design and manufacture fire resistant clothing which means that you can easily find products that can offer you protection against fire. However, there are a lot of misconceptions about FR clothing that you should know about when you are looking to buy them for your personal use.

One of the main misconceptions that many people have about FR clothing is that they think that all kinds of FR garments are more or less the same. This is however far away from the truth. These clothes come in a number of variations that differ in their weight, design and the level of protection that they offer. You will come across mainly two different types of FR clothing, namely inherent FR garments and treated FR garments. The inherent FR garments are made from fabrics are made to be completely flame resistant throughout their life. These products have FR properties built in at molecular level. This means that the protection never wears out and it will remain effective as long as it is used.

The treated FR clothing is exposed to a chemical application that provides them with their FR properties. This means that over time these FR properties are going to degrade and they will become less protective with the passage of time. UV exposure, wearing, abrasion and laundering can shorten the performance of treated FR fabrics. You should also steer clear of FR clothing that comes at cheap rates as they do not naturally guarantee the best quality.
