Leadership Assessment

A great leader normally knows his strengths and weaknesses. When learning about leadership, a critical lesson that I learned is that respect if of great importance. Great leaders tend to appreciate every job that people do irrespective of what job people are doing (Dubrin, 2015). As a leader, it is important to respect other people, and a leader needs to respect others before them respecting you.
Leadership Strength
I understand that a good leader knows his strengths and weaknesses.
Some of the factors that I consider as being my leadership strengths include achiever, responsibility, respect, and belief. My belief is something that I consider as being my leadership strength. I normally believe that people are always ready to challenge what you stand by and as a leader, it is important to stand firm with what you belief. I normally value good ethics in myself and also others, and I tend to stand very firm in what I believe. It is common for most people to challenge what you think and your values. However, when you stand firm in your belief, it will be very difficult for people to change your beliefs. As a leader, I consider belief as being essential in leadership. In leadership, there are times that you will encounter challenges and situations where may require you to question what you believe. However, when I stand firm in what I believe, I will be able to overcome the challenge.
I also have leadership strength of being an achiever. The strength of being an achiever tends to be congruent with my strength of responsibility. In my academic journey, I have always put too much effort in ensuring that I achieve on what I set my eyes. So as to achieve the best, I normally ensure that I have a schedule that I follow so as to make sure that I achieve the target within the set time. I usually enjoy working hard so as to achieve the goals I set. The strength of being an achiever tends to be a great quality to have in leadership. Leaders need to motivate their staff to achieve the goals and put more effort in working hard (Adair, 2013). In leadership, I believe this strength will play an essential role in my responsibility in motivating me to work harder so as to achieve the objectives of the organization.
My third leadership strength is responsibility. In leadership, a good leader needs to be responsible. Leaders need to own up to themselves and also to their actions. The leader should take responsibility for those things that do not go according to the plan (Dubrin, 2015). I consider this as being my strength because, when things do not go as plan, I normally try to take responsibility for the issue and ensure that I consider a new strategy that will help resolve the problem. As being a responsible person, I normally take ownership of what I say that I will do and show commitment to the activity. I normally try to ensure that what I promise to do, I ensure that I accomplish that. I usually try very hard not to make promises that I cannot fulfill. When I take the leadership position, I look forward to using this strength and make sure that I take responsibility for all of my actions.
Respect is another leadership strength that I have. A leader needs to show respect to others so that others can respect them. I understand that effective leaders normally base their leadership on respect. In all situations, I usually try to make sure that I respect other people. I believe that it is through respect that other people will be able to respect me back. It is hard for someone to follow my leadership when they do not respect me. Listening to others is one element that goes hand in hand with respect. I am usually a good listener, and when I listen to others or other people listen to me, I normally feel empowered. When you ignore people, they tend to feel devalued; therefore, I believe that this is a good leadership strength that will have a great impact when I take a leadership position.
Areas to develop
An area that I believe that I need to develop is with regards to empathy. Empathy refers to the ability of understanding and sharing the feelings of others. With this quality, I tend to worry a lot about the feelings of others. Sometimes caring a lot can have a negative impact on performance; however, I do not know how to reduce this to the right extent. Therefore, I believe that this is something that I need to improve so as to be an exemplary leader. Another area that I need to develop is on how to deliver bad news. I normally find it very challenging to deliver bad news because I do not want to hurt the feelings of other people. In most cases, I usually ask someone to deliver the bad news on my behalf. I understand that to be an exemplary leader; I need to improve in this area. A leader should be straightforward in delivery the toughest stuff and make difficult decisions (Adair, 2013). Delivering bad news tend to demonstrate personal courage. Hence, I need to develop my skills and learn how to deliver bad news to people.
Person who shaped my leadership style and philosophy
I believe that my mother did shape most of my leadership style and philosophy. In my family, I am the firstborn and as a result, my mother raised me in a way that I should be responsible. I took care of my siblings and as a result, I learned a lot of being a responsible person. As I am the oldest sibling in the family, my mother did teach me a lot about how to be responsible and from this; I learned how to take responsibility for my actions. My mother taught me about respect and also emphasized the importance of maintaining honesty in everything that I do. Additionally, she taught me never to give up in anything. Having determination is important in completing something. Since I was young; she always encouraged me to keep on pushing even when things seemed to be difficult. My mother has never allowed us to give up on anything. As a result, I learned that through determination, it is possible to achieve even the impossible.
I understand that leadership tends to be different for everyone. Leadership is more than just having power over the followers. There is more involved in leadership and to be an effective leader, one should understand, respect, and take responsibility for their actions among other things.
