What is it about Australia that has led to such widespread adoption? The numbers could be better, but around one in five Australian homes have solar panels on their roofs. Given how people are slow to embrace change, it is an impressive figure for the nation.

But what are the reasons behind the discrepancy between adoption in Australia and the United States?

Competitive Pricing

The reason why solar panels in Hobart and products such as Daikin heat pumps are popular in Australia is because of pricing.
Both the companies selling these products and government ensure that consumers have an incentive to go ahead with the installation.

Electricity is expensive in Australia. The cost of electricity per kilowatt is greater in Australia compared to a place such as the United States. But it does not go all the way in explaining the increased adoption of solar.

The prices of solar systems have come down a lot in the past five years. Solar panels in Hobart and across Australia have been declining in price since the start of the decade, delivering better bang for buck to homeowners.

Federal Incentives

When you add federal incentives on top of the lower prices, it is easy to see why so many Australians are turning to solar. The Australian solar market was hugely boosted by feed-in tariff programs. While these programs have died down in the past couple years, they encouraged many Australians to go with solar panels.

Each time the sun is out, the solar panels would take in and convert the solar energy to usable power. Whatever was not used by a home at the time was then sent to the power grid, with homeowners getting a return for each kilowatt of energy they were delivering.

These programs have declined, with the rates offered by the government a lot lower than before. But it did get many Australians to make the switch, which may have caused their neighbours, friends and family to see the benefit of having solar panels.

Environmentally Conscious and Frugal

Solar panels are an attractive prospect, even if price is not considered. The environmental impact is hugely positive, when compared to consuming more electricity through traditional means. But not every homeowner had the luxury to think purely of the ecological impact of their decisions.

Now Australians can have the best of both worlds. They are able to consume energy in a more eco-friendly way, while they are also saving money. Most solar panels are installed on the basis of instalment programs, where the homeowner pays over many years.

The lower electricity bill, feed-in programs and the overall lower cost of the solar systems means that it is a very attractive financial prospect, especially when used in conjunction with efficient heating systems like Daikin heat pumps.

That is something that has just not been done in the United States - yet.
