Bones form the framework on your body. Strong bones are the foundation on which the muscles are anchored and they are the critical protectors of the most important organs of the body, from the heart to the kidneys. So, right from giving our body its shape to storing precious calcium safely, our bones are definitely some of the most extremely influential portions of the body. Ayurveda categorizes bone as a dhatu or essential element – so the bone tissue is termed asthidhatu. Sadly, today’s hectic lifestyle, poor eating habits, unhealthy postures, and lack of the right form of exercise have put a lot of stress on the asthidhatu, leading to many bone-related disorders. A significant percentage of patients who seek my consultation at my Ayurveda hospital in Chennai are looking for a solution for problems related to the bones.
So here’s a quick overview about why strong bones are such a big deal for our body.
Why should you care so much about strong bones?
Nourishing the bone tissues or asthidhatus should start when you are young and maintained well into adulthood. Bone disorders are often related to vata roga, which in turn depends on a healthy digestive system, especially at the level of the intestines. Hence, when the body struggles with ama or toxins in the intestines, it often leads to weak bones. So the solution for weak bones in such case lies in correcting vata roga through detoxification along with other bone strengthening treatments. But bone strength equally depends on pitta and kapha rogas as well. Imbalances among these two elements also cause bone disorders. While pitta roga leads to inflammatory and other infectious bone conditions, kapha roga causes the bones to become denser such that moving the limbs become painfully tough.
There are a wide range of bone disorders, from rheumatoid arthritis and spondylosis to bone cancers, all of which inherently relate to vata-pitta-kapha rogas. So ensuring strong bones is one of the most critical responsibilities of your body.
Restoring the body’s bone strength
Hence treating every condition requires specific diagnostic protocols that your expert Ayurveda doctor will conduct. Only after a thorough examination can the doctor recommend the best approach of diet, exercise, Ayurvedic procedures, detoxification treatment, and lifestyle changes that will help manage your specific condition.
Diet management includes consuming a diet rich in calcium. However, follow your Ayurveda’s strict instructions when it comes to diet since bone disorders caused by specific rogas have specific diet requirement. Hence, food that is meant for balancing vata roga can be dangerous if the bone condition is triggered by pitta roga. So understand your specific roga that needs to balanced before proceeding with the diet plan. To balance vata roga, nuts, grains, and meat are the core ingredients of a healthy diet. In contrast, to balance kapha roga the diet should include, in measured quantities, fruits and green vegetables, which are of limited use in case of a vata roga. Kapha roga also benefits from increased spice levels in the diet. In case of pitta roga, the diet should include food that decreases temperature, for example, milk and milk products. Herbal formulations will also help restore the balance of the three elements and strengthen the bones. Common ingredients include guggula, amalaki, and arjuna.
Exercise must be monitored with care, else the wrong approach or excessive physical strain will worsen the condition, especially in vata roga where the bones are inherently weak. Start with light exercise patterns such as a brisk walk or light aerobics, slowly increasing in intensity as you are able to strengthen your bones. Remember that the these ex ercises primarily benefit the limbs and backbone. Yoga and meditation also helps with relaxation and confidence building as you proceed with your bone restoration plan.
Building and maintaining strong bones is a lifelong commitment. Hence, make sure you have the right balance of food, exercise, sleep-wake cycle, postures, and overall activities of daily living. Such a balanced approach can help you ensure that you have strong bones right through your adulthood.
