Sports injuries are incredibly common, but many do not treat them in the right way. If left unattended, what may seem as an unsubstantial injury can develop into something serious, impeding athletic performance and negatively impacting your sporting career - whether you are an amateur golfer or a pro tennis player.

What are sports injuries?

Sports injuries are those that occur when engaging in sports or exercise. This can be related to a specific event or activity such as a trip, fall or bad tackle, as well as overtraining, lack of conditioning and the repeated use of improper form or technique.

One of the simplest causes of sporting injuries results from a failure to warm up which will naturally increase the risk of all sports injuries due to reduced performance and stiff muscles.

While injuries can include bruises, strains, sprains, tears and broken bones, not all injuries can be treated in the same way. Some require intensive procedures while others require only mild treatments such as sports massages or simply an improved warm up and stretching routine.

Common injuries

Pulled Muscles

Muscle strain, also known as a pulled muscle, occurs when a muscle is overstretched to the point of tearing. All major sports players and athletes have experienced this at some point in their lives.

Symptoms include pain, swelling, weakness and difficulty or inability to use the muscle - especially when continuing in the activity that caused the pain in the first place as this will further antagonise the damaged tissues.

Muscles in the quadriceps, calves, hamstrings, groin, low back and shoulder are the most common sites for pulled muscles. While these injuries can be fixed with rest, compression, ice and elevation in most cases, serious muscle strains may require treatment by a London sports injury clinic.

Torn Ligament

A torn medial collateral ligament (MCL) is typically incured when the knee joint is pushed sideways when making a wrong move. This can result in pain, swelling and instability of the joint. Surgery may be necessary in extreme cases.

Shin Splints

Shin splints occur because of a repetitive use of your legs resulting in injury. Runners for instance experience this often or those new to a sport whose muscles have not developed enough to alleviate the pressure from intensified movements. The result is a constant throbbing, aching or stabbing pain on the insides of the lower leg.

Stretching, resting and applying ice can help relieve the pain and sometimes medication can be taken if pain is high. Alternative methods are also possible for those who do not want to use unnecessary drugs in favour of more natural methods.

Stress Fracture

Stress fractures occur when muscles are no longer able to absorb the impact from physical activity and instead a bone absorbs the pressure of the movement resulting in a break.

This can be common for athletes who are increasing their activities, intensity or movement types. Those new to a sport who are undertaking heavy strain should be careful not to overwork their body.

Rest is prescribed to allow a stress fracture to heal, but sometimes a change of technique or gear is necessary to facilitate healing and prevent future injury.

Sprained Ankle

Sprains may occur when playing sports or doing everyday activities. Simply landing on your feet at a bad angle is enough to cause a sprain for some people. For those who have a large body mass, the risk is even higher.

A sprained ankle is a result of ligaments that support the joint becoming overstretched. Inflammation and pain can be severe depending on the sprain and medication may be necessary for serious conditions.

Treating your injury

There are plenty of London sports injury clinics around these days. Whether your needs are serious and you are competing at a high level, or if you simply suffer from a recurring issue during causal tennis matches, it is worth seeking professional help.

Acubody are London sports injury clinic and are experts in delivering traditional health practices such as acupuncture and herbal medicine.
