If you are suffering from any sort of neck pain it can be due to a number of different causes. One of these is simply the fact of growing older. Getting older can result in degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis, and osteoarthritis.

Degenerative disc disease can cause the intervertebral discs to begin to dry out, which results in a reduction of the elasticity of the disc, and as time passes it may bulge outwards resulting in considerable pain, numbness, and possibly a tingling sensation.

Spinal stenosis can result in the areas where nerves pass through to become narrower which can trap the nerve roots. This also leads to numbness and can cause pain in the neck, shoulders, and arms.

Osteoarthritis is basically wear and tear which causes deterioration of the cartilage. The body reacts to this by forming new bone which can have an effect on the movement of the joints.

Accidents can also cause neck pain, and the most common type of accident is a car accident which results in whiplash. When this happens, the head - which weighs around 15 lbs - moves very rapidly either forwards or backwards beyond the normal range of movement of the head and this has an effect on the muscles and ligaments in the neck which react by tightening up and contracting, which causes stiffness and pain.

Other causes of neck pain can be obesity, poor posture, or even weak muscles in the abdomen, which result in the spine becoming out of balance, and the head then moves forward to compensate for this. Even more reasons for neck pain may be an infection of the spinal cord, compression of the spinal cord, a fracture, or a tumour.

Still other causes of neck pain can be something as simple as sleeping with your head in the wrong position so that you find that you have the problem when you wake in the morning. This is caused once again by the muscles in the neck tightening. Treatment for this can be as simple as letting your body heal itself. You can also gently stretch your neck in order to help the muscles relax, take over the counter painkillers, or even using an ice pack alternated with a heat pack every 15 minutes to assist the healing process.

If you suffer from ongoing neck pain, one answer may be to get a massage. Many patients report that getting a massage or a series of massages can help with neck pain quite considerably. This releases the tensions and resulting inflammation in muscles which can be caused by poor posture or misuse such as sitting hunched over the laptop all day.

Another way of treating the problem is acupuncture neck pain in London. Acupuncture is an Oriental type of treatment that has become very much more accepted in the West over the last four decades, and many neck pain sufferers have found that it has a good effect. Acupuncture has been used in the East since at least the 3rd century BC for many different types of problem, and especially for all sorts of pain. It works on the belief held by the Chinese that the body has a constant flow of energy running through it which they call qi, and all the while that energy is flowing freely there is no problem. However, if the flow of energy becomes blocked it can result in many different types of health problems.

Acupuncture involves inserting very fine needles as thin as hairs into the body along what are known as acupuncture channels where the energy should be flowing freely at the points where they have become blocked. This frees the blockages and allows the energy to flow normally once again. Many patients who have had acupuncture for neck pain have been delighted with the results.

Herbal remedies have also been successful in resolving neck pain. Devil's Claw is a herb from South Africa where it has been used for centuries to cure pain, arthritis, fever, and gastrointestinal issues.

Another herb is white willow bark as used in aspirin and is also used to treat osteoarthritis. Capsaicin cream can also cause temporary relief. Capsaicin is what causes chilli peppers to be hot and can help with osteoarthritis and neck pain, but will need to be reapplied on an ongoing basis.

Acubody is a clinic based in Holborn in London that specialises in Chinese medicine including acupuncture and Chinese herbs. Many of its' patients have reported great benefits of acupuncture when applied for neck pain.
