What Is The Best Type Of Cooker For You?
Total Articles: 10
A cooker is one of those things that lasts for years, in a similar way to a new sofa, a bed, or a wardrobe. You buy a wardrobe once, and you may have it for life. A sofa might last for 20 years until it becomes a bit “squidgy” after kids and dogs have bounced about on it for years, to say nothing of using it just to sit on. A bed can last for 20 years (although bed manufacturers insist that you should buy a new bed every eight years. Well, they would, wouldn’t they?!).
Similarly, a new cooker is not something that you will buy very often, so it follows that on the rare occasion that you do it you need to make absolutely certain that you are buying something that will fit in exactly with your needs. Whether you are looking at new electric cookers, new gas cookers, or possibly a range, you need to ensure that it is compatible with your lifestyle. However, it also has to be compatible with your kitchen.
For instance, most free-standing cookers come in standard widths of between 50cm and 60cm which is fine unless your heart is set on one that measures 60cm, and the space you have is only 55cm. Of course, if you are completely re-designing your kitchen you may want to have a built-in cooker or oven rather than a free-standing one. Possibly you want a cooker with more than one oven, and you can have that as well. Many cookers come with two ovens, although it has to be said that while the total capacity of two ovens will be more than one oven, each of them will be smaller than a single oven.
If you decide on a range – assuming you have the room in your kitchen - you will find that these generally come with two ovens, together with a warming oven and a grill. Depending on the size of the range it will have anywhere from five to eight hobs, so these are ideal if you cook for a large family or do a lot of entertaining.
Some cookers today come with double or triple glass oven doors which are great if you have small children as the outer glass remains cool: if they touch it, they won’t get burned. Oven cleaning is another chore that most people dread, but you can also get cookers with ovens that self-clean. When you have finished the cooking you press a button and the oven heats up to around 480°C and all the grease turns to ash. All that you then need to do is wipe it off the oven floor – having waited a suitable time for the oven to have cooled down again!
Many cookers today have a grill in the top of the oven, but there are still some models available which have an eye-level grill which is great for seeing how your food is grilling without having to open the oven door and pull out the tray.
Other cookers have oven controls which permit you to set the temperature, programme, and timer, and some also have options that let you turn the oven on and off again automatically at a pre-determined time. That means that you can prepare the food, put it in the oven, and you don’t even have to be at home while it cooks: all you have to do is be back when it is ready!
As regards hobs, you will find that some gas hobs have an extra-large burner for woks which can obtain high temperatures very quickly. This is useful if you like stir-fries. Other hobs have sensors which prevent a pan from boiling over and spilling on to the hob. Still others may have sensors which set off a sound when water is boiling in order that you are notified.
Some cookers also have a lock which prevents the oven from being adjusted by a naughty child when you are not looking.
So, yes, there is a lot to take into consideration when choosing a 21st century cooker, so don’t rush it. Take your time and get the right cooker for you.
New Life Appliances supplies a wide variety of cookers of different makes with a choice of different features. These may be new electric cookers, graded, or refurbished, and generally cost considerably less than buying from one of the major retailers.
